albany, oregon: a budget student's messy take on this weird little city

so albany, oregon. yeah, that place. i flew in on a budget airline that lost my bag, but hey, at least i have my notebook. the weather here is weirdly perfect-like, 22 degrees celsius but feels like 22, humidity 44%. in oregon terms, that's like finding a unicorn that does your laundry. i just checked and it's... pleasantly mild right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

the city has this low-key vibe. old brick buildings, some hipster cafes, and a river that looks like it's seen better days. i keep encountering these numbers: 5710756 and 1840018605. on my bus ticket, on a wall, on a menu. it's like the city's secret code or something. i asked a local and they just said 'huh, must be a glitch in the matrix.'

if you get bored, corvallis is just a short drive away-20 minutes if you catch the lights right. salem's a bit farther but has more museums. both are worth a wander if albany feels too small.

gossip alert: someone told me that the best cheap eats are at 'taco loco' behind the gas station, but i heard from a drunk guy at the bar that it's actually owned by the mayor's cousin and the hygiene is questionable. also, the art center has free yoga on wednesdays, but the instructor is rumored to be a former cult leader. fun times!

i found a sweet hostel for $20 a night via Hostelworld, and i'm eating for under $10 a day thanks to Yelp. there's a free walking tour every saturday-check the Albany Tourism Site for deets. and for local events, the Albany Events Board is clutch.

the people are mix of college kids from LBCC and retirees who've been here since the 70s. i met this old guy at the park who said the covered bridge is haunted, but i think he was joking. maybe.

oh, and the neighbors? oregon's got that small-town feel where everyone knows your business, but if you need a change, eugene's an hour south and the coast is 90 minutes west. someone warned me about the coast fog-comes in fast even when it's sunny.

i started a mini-investigation on 5710756 and 1840018605. turns out, 5710756 might be a bus route number for the albany transit, but i couldn't find any schedule. 1840018605? that one's even weirder. i googled it and got nothing, but when i typed it into the library computer, it brought up a cryptic page about 'the project.' now i'm obsessed. might be nothing, but in a town like this, you grab onto weirdness like a lifeline.

my daily routine: wake up in the hostel, scrape together $2 for coffee at the diner, then wander. the riverfront path is free and has cool graffiti. i saw a heron yesterday, which was rad. the farmer's market on saturdays has $1 strawberries-steal of the century. but beware, the guy selling 'authentic native crafts' is totally importing from china. someone whispered that in my ear.

also, the library is a savior: free books, ac, and weird art shows in the basement. i heard they have a zine collection made by local teens. gold.

for nightlife, there's a bar called 'the launchpad' that has live music sometimes. i caught a punk band last night-three chords and a lot of yelling. perfect.

i should mention the weather again: it's holding steady at 22 c, feels like 22, humidity 44%. no rain yet, but oregon's famous for surprise showers, so i keep my hoodie handy. pressure's high, so no storms. sea level's 1020, whatever that means. i just know i'm not drowning.

neighbors: albany's sandwiched between corvallis and salem, but if you go east, you hit the cascades. i'm planning a hike to mary's peak once i save up for gas. heard the view is insane. someone said you can see the ocean on clear days, but that's probably b.s.

anyway, here's albany on the map:

and these pics from unsplash kinda capture the essence:

brown and white concrete building near green trees during daytime
a couple of tall buildings sitting next to each other
a wooden covered covered bridge over a river

so yeah, albany's a messy little gem. come for the cheap vibes, stay because you lost your bus money. peace out.
