Zamboanga City: Where the Heat Hits Harder Than Your Ex
okay, so i'm sitting here in zamboanga city, and let me tell you-it's hot. like, 28°C hot. feels more like 31°C when the humidity slaps you in the face. i just checked and it's 28°C there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. anyway, i'm here because someone told me the food is legendary, and honestly? they weren't wrong.
first thing i did was wander into the wet market near the city hall. the smell of fresh seafood hit me like a freight train-good thing i'm not vegan, because the grilled tuna jaw at *Alavar's Seafood House is something else. i heard from a drunk fisherman that the best time to eat it is right after the morning catch, so i took his advice. worth it.
"if you don't try curacha, you're wasting your life,"
said a lady selling mangoes. so i did. curacha is this giant red crab thing, and it's messy as hell to eat, but holy crap-worth the sticky fingers.
now, about the weather. it's not just hot; it's that kind of heat where you step outside and immediately question all your life choices. but hey, at least the sea breeze hits you when you're near the coastline. if you're into beaches, Once Islas is a short boat ride away-heard it's like a hidden paradise, but also that the locals guard it like it's their grandma's secret adobo recipe.
i also got lost in the old town area, where the Fort Pilar stands. it's not some shiny tourist trap-it's old, a little crumbling, and honestly, that's what makes it cool. someone said there's a museum inside, but i was too busy sweating to care.
if you get bored, Isabela City and Pagadian are just a short drive away. but honestly, zamboanga's got enough chaos to keep you entertained for days. just don't forget to hydrate-or you'll end up like me, sprawled on a bench, questioning why i thought walking in the afternoon was a good idea.
oh, and before i forget-someone told me that the best halo-halo in town is at Paseo del Mar*. i didn't believe them until i tried it. now i'm just sad i can't eat it every day.
anyway, that's my messy take on zamboanga city. it's hot, it's chaotic, and it's absolutely worth it. just bring sunscreen and a sense of adventure.
