Tozeur Through a Lens: A Freelance Photographer's Desert Daydream
so i landed in tozeur, and my camera is already complaining about the dry air. or maybe it's just me. the heat isn't bad, but the dryness is real. i just checked and it's a breezy 17°C with humidity that won't make your camera fog up, hope you like that kind of thing. the locals are cool about photos, but *someone warned me not to shoot near the holy wells without permission - apparently that’s a thing here.
spent the morning in the old medina, which is basically a maze of crumbling mud-brick walls. chaotic but beautiful. the light hits these walls in this insane way at dawn - golden hour is unreal here.
i heard that the best shots are at dawn, because the light hits the sand in this magical way.
if you get bored, douz and nefta are just a short drive away, and totally worth the detour for some different desert vibes. tried to shoot the star dunes* at sunset but my battery died. classic.
someone told me that the locals are super cool about letting you shoot, but maybe don't set up a tripod in the middle of the market.
the pressure is 1020 hpa, which i read is good for clear skies, but don't quote me on that. humidity is 48%, so not too sticky. checked out this local photography spot recommended by some dude in a café - turns out it’s just a random alleyway, but the shadows were killer.
also found this desert guide on yelp - pricey but the guy knew all the hidden viewpoints. and this tourism board has decent maps if you get lost like i did.
tomorrow i’m chasing mirages. or maybe just napping. depends on how my battery holds up.
