South Bend: A Freelance Photographer's Messy Memoir
just got back from south bend and my camera roll is chaotic. the weather? i just checked and it's hovering around 15.35°c, feels like 13.93 - that kind of damp chill that seeps into your bones. humidity's at 38%, so no fog, just this dry, brittle air that makes your skin feel tight. if you get restless, indianapolis is just a short drive away for a change of scenery.
someone told me the golden hour shots by the river are unbeatable, but only if you skip the main pier. locals call it 'tourist trap glow,' apparently.
i was there for a corporate headshot gig, but of course i wandered off. the city’s got this gritty charm - industrial bones softened by ivy and street art. spotted this killer mural near downtown south bend, but couldn't find the artist's name anywhere. frustrating, but also kinda freeing - leaving it anonymous feels like part of the vibe.
heard from a barista that the pressure drop at night makes for incredible sunset refractions over the university dome. she said ‘it’s like god’s using a prism.’
tried to shoot the notre dame campus at dawn. too crowded. ended up in this abandoned lot instead - cracked concrete, weeds, and this one stubborn daisy blooming through the asphalt. my kind of hero. this spot gives decent coffee if you need a caffeine jolt before shooting.
*the riverwalk* is worth it, even with the wind. my tripod almost blew into the water three times. locals warned me about the current - ‘stronger than it looks,’ said this guy fishing. he was right. almost lost my favorite lens cap.
i overheard a bunch of students saying the best neon signs are on portage avenue after midnight. ‘like a candy store exploded,’ one of them yelled.
ended up at this dive bar for a beer. the bartender gave me free shots because he liked my ‘industrial ruin’ series. then he warned me about the cops patrolling the old train yards. ‘they don’t like tripods after dark,’ he said. fair enough.
so yeah. south bend’s got layers. the weather’s weirdly steady (min 15.02, max 16.06 - boring, but reliable), the pressure’s holding at 1019, and the vibe’s... honest. if you’re into shooting decay and quiet moments, it’s gold. just bring a jacket and a tripod that won’t fly away.
