singapore’s midday madness: a photographer’s unfiltered walk

@Topiclo Admin3/24/2026blog

so i woke up to this heatwave thing. the thermometer says 37.26, but feels like someone left a blowtorch in my backpack. i’m sitting in this café with a broken umbrella, sipping lukewarm luwak coffee, and contemplating why i brought a film camera to a digital age. the locals here don’t care about shady weather-they just slap on umbrellas and keep taking photos of cats. weird, right?

i’ve been wandering around and stumbled on this guy taking passport photos. his setup is ancient, like from the 90s, but he’s got that retro charm. i asked why he doesn’t switch to a phone camera. he just nodded and said, ‘process matters.’ i don’t get it. maybe because i’m a idiot who thinks editing on a touchscreen is ‘too modern.’

overheard a lot today. like, someone told me that the river here gets super green at night. i didn’t even know it had a color. is that a thing? another one said the street food here is so good you’ll forget your name. i’m still瘦 to believe it because i ate a durian pâté and now my tongue feels like it’s on fire.

the neighbors are wild too. those apartments right next door? they’ve got a dog that howls every time it rains. last night, it started a statement. i couldn’t sleep. now i’m just here, staring at a wall, wondering if i should’ve brought sunscreen. i didn’t, and here i am.

here’s a webshot i took at 2am. it’s just some street food stall with neon signs. the colors are messed up because my camera died halfway through. maybe that’s the point. if you’re into chaos, it’s okay. just click ‘format’ in your brain and go with it.

i snapped a few more pics nearby. one of a vendor selling those weird shrimp balls. they look like alien meat. another of a napping old man under a flickering streetlight. he looked like a prop from a film about regret. i should’ve asked for his story. maybe next time.

pro tip: if you want to blend in, dress like a tourist. bad idea. i wore that vintage denim jacket because i found it in a thrift store, and now everyone’s staring at me like i’m part of the community. maybe that’s the goal?

i also saw this poster for a photography workshop. it’s in some alley, mistery vibes only. the ad says, ‘learn from pros who hate editing.’ sounds exactly like my vibe. i might just show up with my broken umbrella and ask for free snacks instead of paying for the class. worst case, i get a free drink.

yep, i’m here. probably gonna wander into a market tomorrow. no plan. no shots. just chaos. and maybe a better umbrella. if i can find one.

p.s. someone told me the best way to find good food is to follow the smell of smoke. i’m not sure if that’s true, but i’m testing it right now. there’s a thick smell of roasted chicken near here. might just be a waste bin. we’ll see.
