San Salvador: Sweat, Pupusas, and a Whole Lotta Buzz
okay, so i’m still buzzing from this trip. san salvador. who knew? honestly, i didn’t really know anything before i landed. i’d seen pictures, read a few articles, but nothing prepared me for the sheer…energy of the place. it’s like the whole city is vibrating on a slightly higher frequency.
I’m a touring session drummer, right? So, I’m used to chaos. I’m used to late nights, dodgy venues, and the general feeling that anything could happen at any moment. But san salvador…it’s a different kind of chaos. It’s a beautiful, vibrant, slightly overwhelming chaos.
I just checked and it's…a humid blanket draped over everything right now. Twenty-seven point something degrees, feels like the same. Pressure’s steady, humidity’s clinging, but honestly, you get used to it. You have to. I’m not gonna lie, I was sweating through my shirt within five minutes of stepping off the plane.
First things first: pupusas. seriously. find them. eat them. all of them. I’m talking cheese, bean, pork, revuelta (a mix of everything) - don’t discriminate. I overheard a guy at a cafe saying, “If you don’t eat a pupusa within the first hour of being in El Salvador, you’re doing it wrong.” I think he might be onto something. I spent a lot of time wandering around the *historic center, which is…well, it’s a lot. Beautiful colonial architecture crumbling alongside modern buildings. Street art everywhere. It’s gritty, it’s real, it’s not sanitized for tourists. I loved it. I found this amazing little coffee shop - Cafe Amor - tucked away on a side street. The coffee was incredible, and the owner, a sweet older woman named Elena, gave me the best recommendations for local spots.
Speaking of spots, someone told me that the Museo Nacional de Antropología Dr. Eugenio María de Hostos is a must-see. Apparently, it’s got a killer collection of pre-Columbian artifacts. I didn’t make it there myself this time, but it’s definitely on the list for next time. I was too busy getting lost in the markets and soaking up the atmosphere.
I also spent an afternoon exploring Parque Nacional El Boquerón. It’s a volcanic crater park just outside the city. The views are insane. You can see the whole bay spread out before you. It’s a bit of a trek to get up there, but totally worth it. Yelp has some good reviews: https://www.yelp.com/biz/parque-nacional-el-boqueron-san-salvador.
I got some seriously weird advice from a drunk guy at a bar. He kept yelling, “Don’t trust the taxis! Walk! Walk everywhere!” I didn’t walk everywhere, obviously, but I did take his warning to heart and was extra cautious. There’s a local forum where people discuss safety tips: https://www.expats.com/el-salvador/san-salvador/safety-tips-san-salvador-148771.html.
If you get bored, Santa Ana and Sonsonate are just a short drive away. I didn’t have time to explore them properly, but I heard they’re worth a visit.
Honestly, san salvador isn’t a place you “do.” It’s a place you feel*. It’s a place that gets under your skin. It’s a place that challenges you, excites you, and leaves you wanting more. I’m already planning my return trip. I need more pupusas in my life. And maybe a little less humidity. But definitely more of that buzzing energy. Oh, and one last thing: I heard that the nightlife scene is pretty wild. Apparently, there are tons of bars and clubs that stay open until the early hours of the morning. I didn’t get a chance to experience it myself, but it’s definitely something to look into.
Okay, gotta go. My brain is still processing everything. San Salvador, you were…something else.
