Philadelphia Feels Like a Glitch in the Matrix (and I'm Here For It)
okay, so i just landed in philadelphia. the vibes are… intense. i'm not even sure what to make of it yet. the initial read on the atmospheric data? 5178195... and then 1840001080? what even is that? feels like a code someone forgot to delete. but seriously, the air is… something. it's not humid, but there’s this dampness, like the city is perpetually exhaling. temp is hovering around 8.8c (feels like 7.28c - brrr!), a bit chilly, but the sun's trying to peek through. pressure’s normal, humidity’s a respectable 64%, elevation's fairly level, which is a relief after that last mountain pass.
i'm staying in a little Airbnb near South Street. honestly, the building looks like it’s held together with hopes and dreams and a good amount of duct tape. but hey, character, right? first impressions? loud. really loud. the neighbors… well, they’re a kaleidoscope. a mix of hurried business types, folks sporting vintage band tees, and a surprising number of people walking dogs dressed in tiny sweaters. i heard one guy yelling about his sourdough starter this morning - seriously.
i’m here for a week, trying to soak up the history, find decent coffee (a need, not a want), and maybe stumble upon some street art. i’ve got a vague itinerary-Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, Reading Terminal Market-but i’m planning on letting the city guide me. i’m a firm believer in getting lost.
i’m a total gear mess, as usual. think: overflowing backpack, questionable camera choices, and way too many layers.
*Essentials:
*Camera: my trusty old Canon (fingers crossed it doesn’t die).
*Notebook & Pen: gotta jot down all the weird things i see.
*Portable Charger: essential for all this documenting.
*Reusable Water Bottle: gotta stay hydrated, you know?
*Comfy Shoes: this city demands walking.
honestly speaking, someone told me that the cheesesteak situation is a minefield. apparently, there’s a whole language around ordering one that’ll confuse even the most seasoned traveler. i'm bracing myself. i also heard that the murals in the Old City are completely worth seeking out - looks like a good spot for some photo ops. i'm checking out some hiking trails near Fairmount Park too; gotta get some fresh air.
the weather forecast just updated-it’s starting to drizzle. looks like a classic philadelphia afternoon. i'm checking out some local board posts on Craigslist for impromptu events. if you get bored, New York is just a short drive away, and Wilmington, DE, is also pretty accessible.
i'm going to wander around for a bit, maybe grab a coffee (wish me luck finding a good one), and see where the day takes me. i’m hoping to catch some live music somewhere, maybe find a quirky little shop. anyone have any must-see recommendations? hit me up in the comments!
i’ve also heard that the history museums here are top-notch-something a local warned me about is to book tickets online in advance, or you’ll be waiting in a ridiculously long line. and a little tidbit: Apparently, the best bagels are found at a tiny place on South 9th Street, but it’s always packed.
the sheer energy of this city is… intoxicating. it’s chaotic, gritty, and full of stories. i’m already feeling it in my bones.
i’m off to explore! wish me luck navigating this beautiful, bizarre place. oh, and i’m definitely going to try to decipher that code. seriously, 1840001080...? what does that mean*?
i'm planning to check out TripAdvisor for some restaurant recommendations later.
