orlando: where the pavement sizzles and running dreams evaporate
just landed in orlando and immediately regretting my shoe choice. i just checked and it's *sweat-inducing thick air right now, hope you like that kind of thing. feels like running through a wet blanket. humidity's cranked way up, which is basically hell for someone chasing marathon PRs under this pressure cooker. the locals say itās ānormalā but then again, these people probably think AC is a sport.
if you get bored, tampa and miami are just a short drive away, but seriously? why would you leave? orlandoās got these weird pockets of zen even in the chaos. someone told me that the park system here has hidden trails where you can actually pretend youāre not in a theme park parking lot. also heard that lake eola* is sacred runner territory, especially at dawn when the humidity hasnāt fully woken up.
tried the west orange trail yesterday - concrete got so hot my soles started melting. saw this guy running barefoot like it was nothing. must be a local thing. then some drunk guy at a roadside stand warned me that āalligators love runners who stop for selfiesā which is either solid advice or wishful thinking. either way, kept my phone in my pack.
food situation is... complicated. found this spot called fuel up that does insane recovery smoothies. also discovered k restaurant where the chef apparently hates runners but the post-run burgers are divine. heard whispers about a secret carb-loading spot near universal but havenāt located it yet. probably requires a password and maybe sacrificing a gu packet.
someone told me that the disney marathon is basically a costume party masquerading as a race. like, people run dressed as mickey while youāre struggling in real shorts. also heard that volunteers hide hydration stations behind character meet-and-greets - so if you see goofy offering water? take it. probably your only chance.
āif youāre not sweating by mile 3, youāre not running hard enough - youāre just jogging in floridaā - some guy with calf tattoos at a 5k
gear-wise? my shoes are dying. found orlando running company but their ābreathableā mesh feels like a joke here. humidity turns everything into a swamp. also discovered the orlando track club - turns out they meet at 5am to avoid the sun. wise.
pressureās weird too - like the airās holding its breath. locals say it changes before storms, but storms here sound like a dragon clearing its throat. humidity makes everything feel like youāre underwater. not the worst thing when youāre trying to forget how far you still have to run.
so yeah, orlandoās a weird mix of magical and miserable for runners. but hey, if you can survive a long run here? you can survive anything. maybe. just bring extra salt and pray for a breeze.
