Orlando: Not Just the Mouse, But the Heat and Humidity Too

okay so orlando… i landed here thinking it’d be all theme parks and tourists, but nah, it’s got layers. like a weird onion. first off, the weather’s a trip. i just checked and it’s 23.25°C with 48% humidity, feels like 22.88°C. hope you like that kind of thing. i’m sweating just typing this, but in a good way, like i’ve been on a treadmill for three hours and forgot to stop.

i heard from a barista at this hipster coffee spot downtown that the best thing to do is rent a bike and just ride around lake eola. she said it’s “the real orlando,” whatever that means. i did it. it’s nice. swans. fountains. people walking dogs that look more groomed than me after a week without a shower. but hey, it’s charming in a “we’re not miami but we’re trying” kind of way.

if you get bored, tampa and daytona are just a short drive away. or so i’m told. i haven’t left yet because i’m too busy trying to find the best cuban sandwich in town. apparently, there’s a place near winter park that locals swear by, but i can’t remember the name. something like “the cuban spot” or “bread and glory.” anyway, someone told me that if you don’t get the mojo pork, you’re doing it wrong.

and speaking of locals, i met this guy at a dive bar who claimed he used to work at disney. he said the tunnels under the magic kingdom are real, and that employees call it “utilidor city.” i don’t know if that’s true, but it sounds like the kind of thing you’d say after three beers and a shot of fireball.

so yeah, orlando. it’s not just about the mouse. it’s about the heat, the humidity, the weird little corners you find when you’re not looking for them. and if you’re into that kind of thing, check out tripadvisor for more ideas or yelp for the cuban sandwich hunt. just don’t blame me if you get lost in the utilidors.
