Nellore: Where My Dance Dreams Met Dusty Streets
well, here i am again, typing away in a café in nellore, wondering how i ended up here. my last tour had me staying in room 1258922 at some flea-bitten hotel before hopping on a train with ticket 1356160843. the dance life, right? always running on rhythm and cheap coffee.
and oh, the weather here is... well, i just checked and it's 24.19°C with humidity that makes your dance crew look like they just stepped out of a steam room, hope you like that kind of thing. if you get bored, *Chennai and Hyderabad are just a short drive away. but honestly, i haven't had time to explore beyond Penamuru Lake and the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple.
someone told me that the temple priest moonlights as a DJ. saw him scratching vinyl records at a wedding last week. no joke.
and then there was this local street food stall near the bus stand. the mirchi bajji is to die for, but i heard that the guy running it used to be a famous chef in Hyderabad. something a local warned me about: "don't eat the gobi manchuri after 8 pm, the oil is recycled." not kidding. TripAdvisor: Nellore Attractions has way better recommendations.
we stayed at this place called Hotel Grand Heaven. not the fanciest, but the owner is a dancer himself! he told me about this dance competition happening next month that attracts talent from all over Andhra Pradesh. if you're into Kuchipudi or Bharatanatyam, you should check it out. Yelp: Restaurants in Nellore points you to the best dosa spots.
and then there was the beach*. okay, it's not the prettiest, but the sunsets are killer. i did a little impromptu performance there and this group of kids joined in. pure magic. but i heard that the tide has been weird lately, so maybe ask the locals before you go for a swim. Local Board: Nellore Travel Forum has some horror stories about that.
so yeah, that's my time in nellore. not your typical tourist spot, but if you're looking for something off the beaten path, it might just be your thing. just pack extra deodorant, okay?
