moscow: where the history is cold and the vodka is warm
so, here i am in moscow again. it's been a while, but the city hasn't changed much. same old buildings, same old traffic. and wow, the weather? i just checked and it's... -19.71°C, feels like -26.37°C, hope you like that kind of thing. the humidity is 100% too, so itās that special kind of cold where your nose hairs freeze instantly. perfect for sightseeing, right?
speaking of sightseeing, moscowās this mess of history plopped on the east european plain. if you get bored, krasnogorsk, lyubertsy, balashikha, khimki, and odintsovo are just a short drive away. not that iāve been to any of them, but hey, options. the cityās got this weird seven-hill thing like rome, but with more snow and fewer togas.
the kremlinās the big deal here. someone told me that those cathedrals inside are older than my grandmaās dentures, and ivan iii rebuilt it in white stone because he was fancy. saint basilās is the colorful one tourists love. itās like someone dropped a crayon box on red square. speaking of red square, itās got leninās mausoleum and gum store. gumās just a fancy mall, but the buildingās old so it counts.
foodās hearty. borscht, pelmeni, blini, shashlik, and caviar. someone told me the best pelmeni are near the kremlin. havenāt tried them yet, but if you do, let me know if theyāre worth the frostbite risk. wash it down with vodka or kvass. kvassās like bread soda. weird, but it grows on you.
the metroās nuts. ornate stations like stalin threw up gold everywhere. someone told me theyāre bomb shelters too. makes sense, since moscowās been invaded by mongols, napoleon, and hitler. the cityās got this tough vibe, but honestly? the winters are the real enemy. itās currently -19°C outside. iād rather fight napoleon.
notable people? ivan the great, ivan the terrible, dmitry donskoy, and lenin. leninās the one who moved the capital here in 1918. smart move, probably because itās too cold for revolutions. the populationās over 13 million, all packed in like sardines. trafficās a nightmare. use the metro.
so yeah, moscowās a trip. cold, chaotic, and covered in history. but hey, itās unique. the kremlinās unesco-listed, itās been a capital twice as many times as my ex changed jobs, and itās the āthird romeā after 1325. donāt forget to watch your pockets in tourist spots. otherwise, enjoy your frozen adventure. iām going inside for some kvass and a blanket.
