Manila Mayhem: Humidity, Halo-Halo, and a Whole Lotta Hustle
okay, so. manila. wow. just…wow. i’m still peeling glitter off my eyelids, pretty sure. i’m a touring session drummer, you know? I’ve seen some things. But manila? manila’s a whole other level of…energy. it’s like the entire city is vibrating at a frequency only dogs and pigeons can truly understand.
I just checked and it's…a damp hug right now. Seriously, the humidity is thick enough to spread on toast. Twenty-four point seven seven degrees, feels like twenty-five. Pressure’s steady, but that humidity? Eighty percent. You’ve been warned. Pack light, but bring a towel. And maybe a dehumidifier. Just kidding…mostly.
I was here for a gig - a corporate thing, ugh - but I managed to carve out a few days to actually see the place. And it’s…intense. The traffic is legendary, of course. I spent a solid hour just watching cars inch forward, horns blaring, motorcycles weaving through like caffeinated bees. It’s a beautiful kind of chaos, though. A strangely compelling ballet of near-misses.
I stayed in *Malate, which was…interesting. It’s got this gritty, lived-in feel. Lots of karaoke bars, street food vendors, and people just…existing. I stumbled across this tiny hole-in-the-wall restaurant - I can’t even remember the name - but the adobo was insane. Seriously, I’m still dreaming about it. Someone told me that the best adobo is always made by someone’s grandma, and I’m inclined to believe them.
Speaking of food, you have to try halo-halo. It’s like…a shaved ice explosion of sweetness. Beans, jellies, fruit, leche flan, ube ice cream…it’s a sugar rush in a cup. I found a place near Intramuros that apparently makes it with homemade ube ice cream. I’m adding it to my list for next time. Check out TripAdvisor for some recommendations: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g298460-Manila.html
Intramuros itself is worth a wander. It’s this walled city, a remnant of the Spanish colonial era. The architecture is gorgeous, all crumbling stone and faded grandeur. I got completely lost, which, honestly, was half the fun. I overheard some drunk tourists complaining about the heat and the crowds, but I didn’t mind it. It felt…real.
“A local warned me about pickpockets in Intramuros. Said to keep your valuables close and your wits about you. Apparently, they’re pros.”
If you get bored, Tagaytay is just a short drive away. The views of Taal Volcano are incredible. I didn’t make it this time, but it’s definitely on the list for next time. I also heard that Pampanga is the culinary capital of the Philippines - apparently, they take their food very seriously. Yelp has some good reviews: https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=restaurants&find_loc=Pampanga%2C+Philippines
My gear list for manila (because, you know, drummer stuff):
Extra strings (humidity is a string killer)
Dehumidifying pouches for my drumheads
A really good sweat towel
Earplugs (seriously, the traffic is loud)
A portable fan (essential)
Sunscreen (duh)
A phrasebook (although most people speak English)
Honestly, manila isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s chaotic, it’s crowded, it’s hot, and it’s humid. But it’s also vibrant, it’s energetic, and it’s full of life. It’s a place that gets under your skin, that stays with you long after you’ve left. I’m already planning my return trip. Maybe I’ll check out some local music venues. There’s a board online with listings: https://www.pinoyreverb.com/
Pro-tip: Learn a few basic Tagalog phrases. Even just “hello” (kumusta) and “thank you” (salamat) will go a long way. And be prepared to haggle - it’s part of the culture. Don’t be afraid to get lost. Some of the best discoveries happen when you’re wandering aimlessly.
