Lisbon's a Blur: Lost in Pastel and Pastéis de Nata
okay, so, i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and questionable espresso. 2753638 and 1528487371 - those numbers just keep looping in my head, like a broken record. it’s… a thing. i landed in Lisbon yesterday, and honestly, it’s a sensory overload in the best way possible. the air smells like salt, frying dough, and something vaguely floral that i can’t quite place. it’s…there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.
I’m staying in Alfama, which is basically a giant, crumbling maze of cobblestone streets. it’s chaotic, but in a way that’s… comforting? the rain started this morning - a proper, Lisbon drizzle - and it just adds to the atmosphere. i swear, the buildings here are painted in every shade of pastel imaginable. it’s like someone spilled a giant box of crayons all over the city. i spent the afternoon wandering around, getting hopelessly lost, and eating way too many pastéis de nata. seriously, i think i’m going to turn into one.
Speaking of which, someone told me that the best pastéis de nata are at Pastéis de Belém - but also, someone else (a very drunk guy at the hostel) said the ones from Manteigaria are even better. i’m leaning towards just trying a bunch and seeing which one wins. it’s a scientific endeavor, really.
I checked the weather - 1009 pressure, 79 humidity, sea level. it’s… pleasant. vaguely unsettling, but pleasant. i’m trying to capture the vibe with my camera, but honestly, it’s hard to translate the feeling of being completely overwhelmed and utterly charmed at the same time.
Here’s the gear list i’m currently clinging to:
Camera (obviously)
Notebook (mostly filled with doodles)
Too many socks
A half-empty bottle of water
* A vague sense of direction (which is rapidly disappearing)
If you get bored, Porto is just a short drive away. Apparently, they have amazing port wine. i’m not a huge wine person, but i’m willing to try anything once.
I overheard gossip at the cafe this morning about a hidden courtyard near the São Jorge Castle. “They say it’s where the poets used to meet,” someone whispered. “But it’s only accessible if you know the secret password.” i’m adding that to my list of things to investigate.
“Don’t trust the taxi drivers. They’ll take you to the tourist traps and charge you an arm and a leg.” - A local warned me about that.
I also stumbled across a street art tour - it’s run by this guy named Ricardo, who’s a total legend. he’s covered in tattoos and has this incredibly cynical sense of humor. i’m thinking of joining tomorrow.
I heard that the LX Factory is a must-see - it’s an old industrial complex that’s been transformed into a hub for creative businesses and restaurants. it’s supposed to be really cool. i’ll check it out later. You can find more info here: LX Factory.
“Just wander. Seriously. Get lost. You’ll find the best things that way.” - A drunk tourist offered me this advice.
Honestly, i’m just trying to soak it all in. Lisbon is… intense. It’s beautiful, it’s gritty, it’s confusing, and it’s utterly captivating. i’m going to go find another pastel de nata. and maybe a stronger coffee. Check out some more local spots here: Yelp Lisbon.
And if you're looking for some recommendations for where to stay, TripAdvisor has some good options: TripAdvisor Lisbon.
I’m officially exhausted. Time for a nap. Maybe i’ll dream about pastel de natas. Seriously, i’m considering opening a bakery. Or at least a really good pastéis de nata stand. Check out some local events here: Visit Lisbon.
