Lisbon Lost & Found: A Whirlwind in Portugal

okay, so lisbon. where do i even begin? i'm pretty sure my brain is still trying to process the sensory overload. the numbers 1066831 and 1450489692 popped into my head randomly, and honestly? felt like a code to unlock the city's chaotic charm. the weather right now? intensely humid. like, you can practically feel the ocean breath on you. there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

i'm a freelance photographer, so my days are basically a blur of chasing golden hour and inhaling pastel de natas. it’s a beautiful mess, really. i actually stumbled upon this little hidden gem of a cafe near the Alfama district; TripAdvisor says it’s a local favorite, and i can see why. the walls were covered in azulejo tiles, and the smell of coffee was intoxicating.

seriously, the buildings here… they’re all different shades of ochre and terracotta, stacked on top of each other like a drunken Jenga tower. and the hills! goodness, the hills. my calves are screaming, but the views? worth every single agonizing step.

i’ve been wandering around for days, just letting the city guide me. i even tried to learn a few phrases in Portuguese, but i think i mostly just ended up sounding like a confused parrot. someone told me that the best fado houses are tucked away in the backstreets of the Mouraria neighborhood. i’m planning on checking one out tonight. i’m a bit intimidated, to be honest; it feels like you need to know something before you even walk in.

the locals are… interesting. really friendly, but with a certain air of knowing something you don’t. i noticed a lot of people hanging out in the Praça do Comércio, just chatting and soaking up the sun. it’s a great place to people-watch, and you can usually find some street performers there too. i’m trying to capture the essence of this place, the feeling of history and resilience that seems to seep out of every stone.

i heard that the Time Out Market Lisboa is a must-do for foodies. Time Out Market Lisboa. I'm thinking of heading there tomorrow. I'm also planning a day trip to Sintra, but i’m a bit worried about the crowds. Apparently, it’s incredibly popular with tourists. but the palaces there look insane.

the humidity is making my camera lens fog up constantly; i desperately need to invest in a decent lens cloth. and the pigeons! oh god, the pigeons. they’re everywhere, and they’re not afraid of anything. i swear one actually tried to steal my sandwich earlier. i’ve been looking at some tutorials on YouTube to learn some new editing techniques. it’s exhausting being a photographer sometimes.

“Beware of pickpockets near the tourist hotspots. They’re surprisingly good.” - a very serious-looking gentleman at a cafe.

honestly? lisbon is a city that gets under your skin. it’s gritty and beautiful, chaotic and calming. it’s a place where history and modernity collide, and where you can easily lose yourself in the narrow, winding streets. if you’re looking for an adventure, you absolutely have to come here. but be prepared to be swept away.

i’m heading to the LX Factory tomorrow - apparently it's a cool industrial complex with shops and restaurants. and i might try to find a fado show. wish me luck. the rain’s threatening, but there might be a rainbow later. it’s like lisbon has a personality of its own, always changing, always surprising.

i'm staying in a little hostel near the Rossio Square; highly recommend checking out Hostelworld for options. it’s loud, but it’s got a great vibe. i'm already planning my return trip.
