Kyoto’s Got a Grip (and Maybe a Ghost)

@Owen Steele3/11/2026blog

okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and matcha. seriously, i haven’t slept properly in like, three days. but you guys, kyoto? it’s… something. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the humidity is clinging to everything like a damp silk scarf, and the pressure’s sitting at 1022 - feels like someone’s gently squeezing my eyeballs. it’s kinda intense, honestly.

I landed here on a whim, mostly because my flight was cheapest from Osaka. and honestly, i’m so glad it was. it’s not the postcard-perfect, cherry-blossom-everywhere kind of place you see in the ads. it’s… lived-in. gritty. like a really cool, ancient grandpa who’s seen everything and isn’t afraid to tell you about it.

I’m staying in this tiny guesthouse near Gion - it’s basically a converted warehouse with tatami mats and a grumpy old woman named Hana who makes the best miso soup i’ve had in ages. she doesn’t speak much english, but she gives you this look, you know? like, ‘you’re staying here, you’re eating my soup, and you’re not complaining.’ it’s intimidating, but also… comforting?

Spent the morning wandering through Fushimi Inari-taisha. thousands of those red torii gates snaking up the mountain. it’s insane. i swear i saw a fox shadow once, but it could’ve been the heat. someone told me that the foxes are messengers of the god Inari, so, you know, good luck with whatever you’re praying for. i was praying for sleep.

Then i stumbled into this tiny ramen shop - ‘Ramen Ichiban’ - it’s tucked away down a side street and the guy behind the counter just pointed at a bowl and charged me 800 yen. it was incredible. seriously, the broth was like liquid velvet. i overheard a group of college students talking about a local legend - something about a geisha who haunts the streets of Gion, searching for her lost lover. they said she appears as a shimmering white figure, and if you see her, you’re doomed to wander the city forever. spooky, right?

I’m trying to document everything, but my camera’s battery is dying faster than my sanity. here’s the gear list, because i’m a weirdo like that:

Camera: Canon R6 (obviously)
*Lenses: 35mm, 50mm, 85mm - the holy trinity
*Backup Batteries: Three. Seriously, three.
*Portable Charger: Because, you know, batteries.
*Notebook & Pen: For capturing all the chaotic thoughts.
*Comfortable Shoes: You’ll be walking a lot.
*Hand Sanitizer: Let’s be real.
*Miso Soup:* For Hana.

I heard that the Nishiki Market is a must-see - apparently, it’s a sensory overload of pickled everything and weird seafood. i’m not sure i’m brave enough for that. i’m more of a ramen and quiet contemplation kind of traveler, tbh.

If you’re looking for a place to chill, [Kyoto Station] is just a short train ride away. and if you get bored, Osaka is just a short drive away. i’m thinking of heading over tomorrow to check out Dotonbori - all the bright lights and crazy food.

Seriously, the vibe here is… intense. it’s like the city is holding onto its history, but also trying to move forward. it’s a beautiful, unsettling mix. i’m starting to think that ghost story might be true. i keep feeling like someone’s watching me. maybe it’s Hana. or maybe it’s the geisha.

I found this little antique shop near Kiyomizu-dera Temple - the owner, a wizened old man named Kenji, was showing me a collection of ancient scrolls. he said they were written by a samurai who was obsessed with the moon. he wouldn’t tell me the price, just smiled and said, “it’s worth whatever you’re willing to pay.” i ended up buying one - it’s probably worthless, but it feels… significant.

I’m going to grab some more coffee - black, strong, and desperately needed.

Okay, that’s it for now. i need to go find a dark corner and try to sleep. wish me luck.
