Kyoto Chaos: Noodles, Ghosts, and Seriously Weird Rain
okay, so, i’m pretty sure i’m running on caffeine and regret. the humidity here is like, 48%? feels like 8.98? it’s clinging to everything. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the pressure is 1023, which is… unsettling. i’m not gonna lie, i’m already craving a proper shower and a solid eight hours. but, you know, travel.
Kyoto. it’s… a lot. like, a beautiful, ancient, slightly unsettling lot. i landed yesterday and immediately went straight for ramen. found this tiny place tucked away down a side street - seriously, you could miss it - called ‘Kitsune’s Kiss.’ the broth was this deep, smoky pork flavor, and the noodles were perfectly chewy. someone told me that the owner, a tiny old dude named Hiroshi, uses a secret family recipe passed down for generations. i’m not saying it was the best ramen of my life, but it was definitely a contender. check out Yelp for some other options: Yelp Link.
I’ve been wandering around Gion, trying to spot a geisha. haven’t seen one yet, but i did see a guy dressed up as a samurai arguing with a vending machine. it was… dramatic. the rain started coming down in sheets this morning - not a gentle drizzle, mind you, but a full-on, biblical downpour. it smelled like wet moss and something vaguely metallic. it’s like the city is actively trying to drown you in history.
Spent the afternoon exploring Fushimi Inari-taisha, the shrine with all the red torii gates. it’s insane. like, seriously, miles and miles of them snaking up the mountain. i only made it about halfway - my legs were screaming. i swear, i saw a flicker of something moving in the shadows near one of the gates. probably just a squirrel, but… you know.
Here’s the gear list, because someone always asks:
Camera: Sony Alpha 7 IV (duh) - gotta capture the weirdness.
*Rain Gear: A ridiculously oversized poncho. Seriously, invest.
*Comfortable Shoes: Like, really comfortable. You’ll be doing a lot of walking.
*Pocket Wifi: Don’t even think about trying to navigate without it.
*Snacks:* Japanese Kit Kats. Obviously.
I overheard gossip at a tiny izakaya last night - a local warned me about the ‘Kiyomizu-dera’ area after dark. apparently, there are some seriously active ghosts. someone said they’ve seen figures wandering around the temple grounds, and heard strange whispers. i’m not usually into that stuff, but… i’m starting to think i might be.
Speaking of weird, i stumbled across this incredible little shop selling vintage kimono fabrics. the colors were insane - deep indigo, vibrant crimson, shimmering gold. i almost bought a whole bolt, but my suitcase is already overflowing. check out some local craft markets on TripAdvisor: TripAdvisor Link.
I’m heading to Arashiyama tomorrow - the bamboo forest is supposed to be breathtaking. and maybe, just maybe, i’ll try to catch a glimpse of a geisha. or at least a less argumentative vending machine.
I heard that the Nishiki Market is a must-see, but also incredibly crowded. maybe go early? or late? i don’t know. i’m just winging it. if you get bored, Osaka is just a short drive away.
Seriously, the rain is relentless. it’s like the sky is weeping.
And one last thing: don’t trust the vending machines. Seriously.
