Kuwana: My Vintage Treasure Hunt in the Cold

okay so i land in kuwana and immediately the weather hits me like a wet sock. just checked and it’s currently hovering around 7.92°C but feels like 5.66°C - the kind of cold that makes you question why you left your warm blanket. and the humidity? 71%. perfect if you enjoy feeling like a walking sponge. not gonna lie, i’ve seen better days, but the vintage scene here is worth the shivers.

white and yellow boat on sea during daytime

so i’m on this vintage clothes mission, right? digging through piles like a raccoon in a dumpster. found this gem of a shop near the old temple - *flea market heaven - but the owner? she’s got eyes like a hawk and a handshake like a vice. i scored a 70s silk kimono jacket for ¥1000, which is basically stealing. but also, i think i caught a cold. worth it? maybe. someone told me this place has hidden racks in the back room where they stash the good stuff. like, actually vintage. but you have to be buddy-buddy with the owner or bring snacks. i brought onigiri. worked like a charm.

“yo, that vintage spot by the river? sketch af. the owner’s got a thing for overcharging gaijins. heard she’ll sell you a polyester shirt from last year and call it ‘retro’. stick to the side streets. trust me.”

and the food? i tried this tiny izakaya run by a guy who looks like he hasn’t slept since 1995. the
grilled eel* was insane, but also, i heard from a drunk local that the chef used to be a sumo wrestler. no cap. if you get bored, nagoya’s just a 20-minute train ride away. bigger city, more chain stores, but also a killer vintage arcade scene. pro tip: skip the mall and hit up this hidden gem for real finds.

“that temple? yeah, it’s cool, but wait till you see the shrine behind it. locals say it’s haunted by a kimono-wearing ghost. i’ve never seen her, but my aunt swears she once touched her shoulder. creepy.”

so yeah, kuwana’s cold, confusing, and full of vintage secrets. if you’re into that sort of thing, check out the local vibe on tripadvisor or find eats on yelp. and for the official lowdown, here’s the city’s tourist board. i think i have frostbite. but i’ve got a killer jacket. so, win?
