Kolkata: Sticky Mangoes, Broken Sidewalks, and a Whole Lotta Noise

@Tobias King3/15/2026blog

okay, so. kolkata. where do i even begin? i’m elara, by the way, and i’m a botanist. usually, i’m knee-deep in ferns and moss, not dodging scooters and trying to figure out how to order chai without accidentally insulting someone. but hey, fieldwork is fieldwork, right? i’m here ostensibly to study some rare orchids, but honestly, i’m mostly just absorbing the chaos.

right now, it's… a humid blanket clinging to everything. seriously, you can practically taste the moisture. i just checked and it’s hovering around thirty degrees, feels like thirty too. not exactly ideal orchid-hunting weather, but you adapt. i’ve been mostly sticking to the early mornings and late evenings, when the sun isn’t trying to melt my face off.

and the noise! oh, the noise. it’s a constant hum of horns, hawkers, and general… life. it’s overwhelming at first, but then it just becomes the background music. i actually find it kind of soothing now, in a weird way. it’s a far cry from the quiet rustling of leaves i’m used to.

my little guesthouse is in *Beliaghata, which is… interesting. the neighbors are mostly families, lots of kids playing cricket in the street. if you get bored, Murshidabad and Bardhaman are just a short train ride away - both have some seriously impressive historical sites, apparently. I’m planning a trip to Murshidabad next week to check out the Nizamat Imambara.

food. okay, we need to talk about the food. it’s incredible. i’ve been living on
phuchka and jhal muri - basically, spicy, tangy, delicious street food. someone told me that the best phuchka in the city is at a little stall near Park Street. i haven’t found it yet, but the quest continues! I also stumbled upon this amazing little restaurant in Shibpur that serves the most incredible macher jhol (fish curry). Seriously, go. Just… go. Yelp has some good restaurant recommendations too.

there’s this… vibe here. it’s hard to describe. it’s a mix of ancient and modern, chaos and calm, poverty and incredible wealth. it’s overwhelming, beautiful, frustrating, and utterly captivating all at the same time. i overheard a couple of guys arguing about politics near
Howrah Bridge - apparently, there’s a lot of debate about the new metro line.

“Don’t trust the taxis near Esplanade,” one guy muttered to his friend. “They’ll charge you double if they see you’re a tourist.”

Another one, leaning against a tea stall, grumbled, “The traffic in Kharagpur is getting worse every year. They need to do something about it.”

I’m trying to be a good guest, you know? learning a few basic bengali phrases, trying to be respectful of the culture. it’s not always easy, especially when you’re trying to navigate the crowded streets and avoid getting run over by a rickshaw. but it’s worth it. this place… it gets under your skin.

my orchid hunt hasn’t been as fruitful as i’d hoped. the humidity is making it difficult to find them in bloom. but i’ve discovered so much more than orchids. i’ve discovered a city that’s alive, vibrant, and utterly unforgettable. i’m already planning my return trip. just… maybe in the winter next time.

pro-tip: always carry small change. you’ll need it for everything. and learn to haggle. it’s expected. and for the love of all that is holy, watch out for the potholes. they are
everywhere*.
