Klaipėda, Lithuania: Damp Socks and Unexpected Charm

@Topiclo Admin3/18/2026blog

okay, so klaipėda. i didn’t really plan to be here. my van, bertram (he’s a temperamental beast, let me tell you), decided he needed a serious existential crisis right outside the city. something about a fuel injector and a deep longing for the baltic sea. anyway, here i am.

and honestly? it’s…nice. surprisingly nice. i just checked and it's drizzling a persistent, clinging kind of rain, the kind that soaks through your boots and makes your socks feel like little sponges. hope you like that kind of thing. the temperature’s hovering around six degrees, feels like even colder, and the air is thick with moisture. pressure’s high, though, which apparently means…something good? i’m not a meteorologist. i’m a wandering musician with a broken van.

I’ve been busking in the *Old Town square, mostly just looping some mellow guitar stuff. people seem to appreciate it, or at least they’re not throwing rotten tomatoes. i overheard a couple arguing about whether the amber museum is worth the price. the guy was adamant it was a tourist trap, the girl was all about the geological significance. classic.

“Don’t eat at the place with the giant lobster statue,” someone slurred at me last night outside the bar. “Overpriced and the lobster looks…sad.”

seriously, a giant lobster statue? that’s a choice. i’m sticking to the little cafes tucked away on the side streets. found one that does amazing potato pancakes - seriously,
amazing. they’re called “bulvytės” apparently. you can check out some reviews on TripAdvisor if you’re feeling adventurous: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g275653-Klaipeda_Klaipeda_County.html.

if you get bored, šiauliai and tauragė are just a short drive away. i’m thinking of heading towards riga next, but bertram’s got other ideas. he’s currently emitting a series of concerning clicks and whirs. i’m starting to suspect he’s deliberately trying to sabotage my travel plans.

I’ve been scoping out the local vintage shops - there’s a surprisingly good one called “Retro Style” on L. Šiuolio gatvė. Yelp says it’s got a decent selection of Soviet-era clothing. https://www.yelp.com/biz/retro-style-klaipeda I’m hoping to find a ridiculously oversized fur hat. you know, for warmth. and irony.

“The seagulls here are ruthless,” a local warned me, while staring intensely at a discarded pretzel. “They’ll steal your lunch. And your dignity.”

he wasn’t kidding. those birds are
aggressive*. i saw one dive-bomb a tourist for a french fry. it was…intense.

I’m also trying to find some decent coffee. apparently, “Kofeina” is the place to go. https://www.facebook.com/KofeinaKlaipeda/ I need something strong. something to combat the damp socks and the existential dread of van repairs.

and the neighbors? well, the baltic sea is right there, obviously. and the curonian spit is supposed to be incredible, but bertram’s keeping me hostage for now. i’m also checking out some local music listings on a forum: https://www.delnasu.lt/klubai-ir-renginiai/klaipeda/. maybe i’ll find someone to jam with.

so yeah. klaipėda. it’s not exactly on the top of everyone’s travel list, but it’s got a certain…something. a quiet charm. a dampness. and a surprising number of giant lobster statues. i’m embracing the chaos. and hoping bertram decides to cooperate soon.
