Hyderabad Heat & Hidden Havens: A Drummer's Dizzying Dispatch
okay, so… Hyderabad. Where do I even begin? I’m Leo, by the way, touring drummer for… well, it doesn’t really matter who, does it? Let’s just say I’ve seen some things. And Hyderabad? It’s definitely something.
I was booked for a festival - a weird fusion thing, lots of sitars and electronic beats, you know the drill. Landed a few days early to scope the place out, and honestly, it’s been a sensory overload in the best possible way. The numbers you gave me? 1269979 and 1356768839… they’re just floating around in my head now, like random drum fills. Don't ask.
I just checked and the air feels like a warm hug that refuses to let go. It’s hovering around 35.45 degrees Celsius, feels like 33.43, and the humidity is clinging to everything like a lovesick puppy. Pressure’s at 1008, ground level’s 939… I’m not a meteorologist, okay? I hit a few drums. That’s it.
First thing I did? Found a chai wallah. Seriously, the best chai I’ve ever had. Spicy, sweet, and strong enough to wake the dead. I’m talking about the one near Charminar. You have to go. Check out TripAdvisor for reviews - though honestly, half of them are probably fake. I overheard someone saying that the guy with the handlebar mustache makes it with secret spices imported from Kashmir. Could be total bunk, but it sounds good, right?
Speaking of Charminar… wow. Just… wow. The architecture is insane. I spent a good hour just wandering around, getting lost in the maze of streets. It’s chaotic, it’s loud, it’s… alive. I stumbled upon this tiny little shop selling *hand-painted bangles. Seriously gorgeous. I bought a bunch for my mom. She’ll love them.
Food. Oh man, the food. I’ve been eating biryani every single day. No regrets. I found this place, Paradise Restaurant, that everyone raves about. It’s a bit touristy, sure, but the biryani is legit. Someone told me that the chef uses a secret blend of saffron and rosewater. I don’t know if that’s true, but it tastes amazing. Yelp has some decent reviews, but take them with a grain of salt.
I’m staying in Banjara Hills. It’s pretty swanky. If you get bored, Secunderabad is just a short drive away. It’s a bit grittier, a bit more… real, I guess. I spent an afternoon wandering around Golconda Fort. The acoustics are incredible. I even did a little impromptu drum circle with some local kids. They were stoked.
Pro-Tip #1: Learn a few basic Telugu phrases. It goes a long way.
Pro-Tip #2: Bargain hard in the markets. Seriously, they’ll start ridiculously high.
Pro-Tip #3: Hydrate. Like, constantly. This heat is no joke.
Pro-Tip #4:* Don't drink the tap water. Seriously. Just don't.
I heard that the Hussain Sagar Lake is beautiful at night, all lit up. I’m planning on checking it out tomorrow. Apparently, there’s a giant Buddha statue in the middle. I’m also thinking about visiting the Salar Jung Museum. I’m a sucker for old artifacts. You can find more info here: https://www.salargjungmuseum.ap.gov.in/
Honestly, Hyderabad is a bit overwhelming, but in a good way. It’s a city that assaults your senses, challenges your assumptions, and leaves you feeling… well, exhausted, but also strangely invigorated. I’m already planning my return trip. Maybe I’ll even bring my drum kit next time. Check out some local music events here: https://www.bookmyshow.com/hyderabad-events
Oh, and one more thing. A local warned me about the traffic. He said it’s “an experience.” He wasn’t kidding. Seriously, be prepared to dodge scooters, auto-rickshaws, and cows. It’s a beautiful, chaotic dance. You can find some helpful driving tips here: https://www.cleartrip.com/travel-guides/india/hyderabad/driving-in-hyderabad/.
Okay, I’m off to find more biryani. Wish me luck.
