Hamamatsu: Spray Paint, Rain, and the Never-Ending Search for a Free Wall

i've been in Hamamatsu for three days now and i'm already hooked on the raw energy of its backstreets. the city's got this weird mix of industrial grit and hidden art that just calls to a spray can junkie like me. i'm writing this from a leaky garage i 'borrowed' for the night, the smell of wet concrete still clinging to my jacket.

the weather here is a total pain in the ass. i just checked and it's sitting at a crisp 9.4 degrees but feels like 5.6 with that damp breeze coming off the river. my fingers are already numb, but that's part of the grind. you learn to work fast before the paint starts *dripping in ways you don't want. humidity's at 50%, not too bad, but it makes the caps clog if you're not careful. i've lost count of how many times i've had to wipe my nozzle on my pants.

i spent my first day scouting. the area around the train station is a maze of abandoned factories and half-empty warehouses. some are covered in amazing
pieces, others are just tags. i met a local crew called the Neon Tigers who gave me the lowdown on the hotspots. they told me to avoid the north side - apparently the cops there are trigger-happy with tickets. but if you hit the east side near the old sake brewery, you can find walls that go for days. someone told me that the owner of that brewery is an old guy who used to be a sumo wrestler, and he'll chase you with a broom if he catches you. i haven't tested that theory yet.

i've been mapping spots on a crumpled piece of paper. there's a massive brick wall behind the
Hamamatsu Textile Mill that's just begging for a huge piece. it's covered in rust and peeling ads, but that's the best kind of canvas. i heard from a whispered rumor on a local forum that a famous Japanese calligraffiti artist did a massive dragon there last year, but it's already been buffed. still, the wall is huge and mostly ignored.

if you get bored of the urban jungle, the surf beaches of Shizuoka are just a short train ride away. i've been thinking about taking a day off to ride waves, but there's always another wall calling.

for gear, i'm rolling with a basic setup: a few cans of
Montana black and white, some cheap caps, and a backpack that's seen better days. i've learned to pack light - you never know when you'll have to make a run for it. pro tip: always have a decoy can of spray paint that's empty - toss it to distract security dogs. (i'm not kidding, i've seen it work.)

i've been using the
Hamamatsu Graffiti Map (link) to find legal walls. there's a few sanctioned spots near the Creative District where you can paint without hassle. i linked it here: Hamamatsu Graffiti Map. also, for supplies, i went to Art Space Downtown - they've got the good caps and a decent selection of colors. i read on Japan Travel Forum that the best time to paint is early morning when the humidity is lower and the streets are empty. i've been trying to adopt that schedule, but my sleep schedule is a mess.

here's a rough map of where i've been hitting:

the other day i found this insane spot behind an old laundry. the wall is cracked and
covered in layers of history - old ads, political slogans, and a faded mural of a geisha. i decided to add my own layer: a stencil of a fox wearing sunglasses. i'm no Banksy, but it felt good. check out the result:

Colorful street mural in Hamamatsu.

that photo is actually from a different city, but it gives you the vibe. i haven't taken my own pics yet - i'm too busy running.

i also got a tip about an abandoned factory turned art space on the outskirts. the place is huge, with multiple rooms and towering ceilings. i sneaked in (maybe not legal) and found some amazing
art already there. it's like a secret gallery. here's a pic i snapped on my phone:

Abandoned factory interior turned into an art space.

i'm still figuring out the local scene. i've heard that the city council is considering a legal wall initiative, but who knows if that'll happen. until then, it's cat and mouse with the security guards. last night i was mid-piece when a guard showed up with a flashlight. i barely escaped, leaving my backpack behind. had to climb a fence and run through a construction site. my heart was pounding like a drum. i got the bag back the next day - apparently the guard thought it was trash and threw it in a dumpster. lucky for me, my cans were intact.

i'm crashing at a cheap hostel i found on TripAdvisor. it's called 'Capsule Inn Hamamatsu' - basically a coffin with a mattress, but it's cheap and close to the action. the guy at reception gave me a weird look when i asked about late check-out; i think he's used to tourists, not artists.

i'm running low on cash, so i've been doing quick tags between bigger pieces. there's a satisfaction in seeing your name on a wall, even if it's just a
throwie. i've been practicing my lettering on scrap cardboard. i'm not great, but i'm getting better.

hamamatsu's vibe is unique - it's not tokyo's flashy streets, but there's a raw, unpolished energy that's perfect for someone like me. the people are mostly indifferent, some even give a nod of respect if you're doing something decent. i've had a few strangers stop and watch while i work, that's always a rush.

i'll probably stay another week before moving on. i've got my eye on a few more walls, and i want to see if i can link up with the Neon Tigers again. they said they'd take me to a secret spot if i bring enough paint. i'm trying to scrape together the cash - maybe i'll do a quick piece at the train station to earn some locals' appreciation (and maybe a few coins).

anyway, i need to get some sleep. the alarm's set for 4am - that's when the streets are emptiest. wish me luck, and if you're in Hamamatsu, keep an eye out for my
fox* stencil. maybe we'll cross paths in the alleyways.

that's all for now. peace out.
