grayson's notes from gdańsk: a city that smells like wet asphalt and regret

@Elena Rossi3/17/2026blog

woke up to a noise like a trapped cat yowling outside my window. not sure if it’s the wind or someone’s trying to stage an escape from their tent. either way, i checked the app and it’s 1.91 degrees celsius but somehow still feels like a sauna in a fridge. humidity at 100% is basically a scientifically backed reason to abandon all plans. weather’s a character here, not some decoy extra.

staying in this place called gdańsk, which is basically the romeo of cities you regret visiting on a whim. alzheimer’s tourist, if you will. rented a room from a guy who sells corn roasted on a grill that smells like a ghost’s last meal. he warned me the tap water here is ‘just a reliable villain’-i’m taking his word for it. if you ask him again, he’ll just shrug and say, ‘it’s poland. you know the rules.’

neighbors here are like a pack of indifferent raccoons. one’s poking at my windows with a bottle of cheap vodka, another’s just there, meticulously watering weeds like they’re staging a rebellion. if you get bored, gdynia is just a short drive away-someone told me it’s got that beach vibe you can only get if you’re trying too hard or drunk.

overheard something at the market about a ‘lost astronaut’ who crashed his drone into a church. don’t ask me for details. the bar next door says it’s true. i heard someone else mention a ghost tour but they didn’t sound so thrilled about it. disbanded crowd laughed, someone spilled coffee on a vintage map, and the bartender just added ‘yeah, that’s a thing’ without explaining anything. those places are like receipts from a parallel dimension.

if you need gear, unplug. seriously. this place doesn’t care if you use a camera or a disposable phone. i’m using a usb-c cable from my bag that might or might not have USB parts inside. not my problem. pro tip: the hostel’s wifi is hosted by a guy in a balaclava who yells at the router every time it rains. he’s either a tech genius or a troll. can’t tell.

found this abandoned skatepark near the river. someone told me it’s called the ‘ghost zone’ because the last time anyone skateboarded there, a seagull stole their bag. maybe true. maybe not. i just sat on a rusty bench and took pics of the sunset. the sky was so orange it felt like someone spilled a coffee stain onto the horizon. got 3 shots. 1 of a seagull judging me, 1 of the skatepark looking like it’s crying, and 1 of me pretending to be brave. all norelevant. but hey, at least the sun was warm.

links? sure. try this hostel for cheap chaos or yawn, check out a local bar if you want to burn money. there’s also a community board in town where people post ‘i need someone to-los-something’ flyers. i saw one for a guy needing a dance partner to practice polish folk steps. no takers. classic.
