Frostfield: Where Drums Freeze and Coffee Stays Hot
okay, so i just got back from frostfield. and by 'back' i mean i’m still here, in my freezing hotel room, trying to thaw out my drumsticks. it’s been a wild ride, let me tell you.
the bus to frostfield was number 5099133, but i think that’s just a code for ‘cold and bumpy’. and the ticket cost 1840003599 cents? no, that can’t be. maybe it’s a secret code for the best place to get a hot dog. i never found out.
we played at the *icebox theater last night. that place is an old converted warehouse, and the acoustics? well, they’re… unique. the bass drum sounded like it was being played from the bottom of a frozen lake. but the crowd was warm, even if the venue wasn’t.
i just checked and it's... hovering around freezing, so pack like you mean it. if you’re thinking of coming here, bring thermal underwear and a good thermos. the old harbor is lovely when it’s not trying to kill you with cold wind, though.
if you get bored, the nearby village of emberwood is just a short drive away. i heard they have a bakery that makes these amazing cinnamon buns. someone told me that the best coffee in town is at cozy cafe, but when i went, the barista was having a crisis about the weather and i ended up with a lukewarm cup. not great.
also, i heard that the frostfield museum is haunted by the ghost of a jazz drummer who never got his big break. true? who knows. but it makes for a good story.
the gig itself was… interesting. the drum riser was so cold, my feet went numb by the second set. and the snare drum? sounded like a box of crackers. but hey, that’s the life of a touring session drummer. you play anywhere, any condition.
pro tip: always carry a portable heater. and maybe invest in some electric drumsticks? just kidding. or am i?
anyway, if you’re ever in frostfield, check out the frostfield jazz club*. it’s underground and the vibe is warm, literally and figuratively. and for more info, you can check out frostfield tourist board or best coffee in frostfield on yelp.
i also found this frostfield historical society online. they have stories about the old days when the town was a logging hub. might be worth a look.
so yeah, frostfield. it’s cold, it’s quirky, and the coffee is questionable. but the people? they’re something else. i’d go back, but only if they promise to turn up the heat.
that’s all for now. my drumsticks are thawing, so i think i’m ready for a nap. until next time, keep those beats warm.
