Fortaleza, Brazil: Beach Chaos and Caipirinha Dreams
ok so i landed in fortaleza and the first thing i noticed was the humidity-it's like walking through a steam room that smells faintly of salt and sunscreen. the numbers say 27.92°c but feels like 32.36°c, which basically means you're gonna be sweating through your shirt before you even find a decent beach bar. i just checked and it's muggy as hell right now, hope you like that kind of thing.
walking along praia do futuro, i overheard a group of locals arguing about the best spot for fried fish. apparently the stand near the lifeguard tower is "the only one that doesn't give you food poisoning," according to a woman in a bright green bikini. i heard that! so i tried it-crispy, salty, perfect with a cold skol beer. if you get bored, *natal and recife are just a short drive away, though honestly i'd rather stay here and people-watch.
random tip: don't trust the guys selling caipirinhas on the sand. someone told me that half of them use cheap cachaça that tastes like nail polish remover. instead, head to praça do ferreira where the bars actually have liquor licenses. tripadvisor has a few good recs if you're feeling cautious.
at night, the praia de iracema area turns into a mix of live forró music and sketchy street vendors. i got dragged into a dance circle by a guy who said he was "teaching me how to move my hips like a local." i looked ridiculous, but hey, that's travel. yelp says the seafood places here are hit or miss, but the hits are really* good.
final thought: fortaleza isn't polished, but that's the charm. it's loud, sweaty, and full of characters. if you're the type who needs everything air-conditioned and predictable, maybe skip it. but if you're down for chaos with a side of ocean breeze, you'll be right at home.
