Dust & Echoes in Valparaíso: A Slightly Broken Trip
okay, so, where do i even start? valparaíso. it’s… a lot. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. 27.62, feels like 29.62, pressure 1009, humidity 67. the air’s thick, like wet wool. i landed yesterday, and honestly, my brain feels like it’s trying to assemble a jigsaw puzzle with missing pieces. the temp min was 27.62, temp max was 27.62. i’m pretty sure i’ve aged five years in the last 48 hours.
I was supposed to be documenting the street art, you know? the real stuff, not the Instagram-filtered tourist traps. but everything’s just… overwhelming. the hills are insane. like, seriously, vertical insanity. i nearly face-planted into a pile of laundry twice. my camera bag is currently buried under a mountain of postcards and half-eaten empanadas. it’s a beautiful disaster.
I found this tiny little cafe - ‘El Refugio’ - tucked away on one of the steeper streets. the owner, a guy named Ricardo, looked like he’d wrestled a bear and won. he didn’t speak much english, but he made the best caleta i’ve ever tasted. someone told me that he used to be a tango dancer, which, honestly, felt completely plausible. i overheard gossip that he’s secretly writing a novel about a lost parrot. wild.
Speaking of gossip, I heard that the best views are from the Mirador Alegre, but you have to be prepared for a serious climb. and that the local fishermen are obsessed with collecting bottle caps. apparently, they use them to build tiny boats. it’s… a thing. i’m not entirely sure i believe it, but it’s definitely a thing.
Here’s the gear list, because apparently, i need to document everything:
Camera (obviously) - the 60D is still kicking, but i’m seriously considering upgrading. maybe a Sony a7iii?
Extra batteries (like, a whole suitcase full) - don’t ask.
Wide-angle lens - for capturing the insane angles.
Rain cover - because, valparaíso.
Hiking boots - essential. seriously, invest in good hiking boots.
A ridiculously large backpack - for carrying all the aforementioned things.
Spanish phrasebook - my spanish is… rusty, to put it mildly.
Earplugs - the street music is… intense.
* A healthy dose of skepticism.
I stumbled across this amazing little shop selling vintage buttons. it was like stepping back in time. i spent a solid hour just browsing, completely lost in the colors and textures. it’s a good place to find a unique souvenir, if you’re into that sort of thing. check it out: https://www.example.com/vintagebuttons
I’m staying in this Airbnb - it’s basically a converted shipping container. it’s…rustic. let’s go with rustic. the wifi is patchy, the shower is tiny, but the view is incredible. it’s perched on the edge of a cliff, overlooking the ocean.
If you get bored, Santiago is just a short drive away. i’m thinking of heading over there tomorrow to check out the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes. i heard that they have a fantastic collection of Chilean art. i’m also planning on hitting up a few of the craft breweries. someone told me that La Piojera is the best place to try local beer - it’s a legendary bar with a chaotic atmosphere. i’m not sure i’m ready for that level of chaos, but i’m willing to try.
I spent the afternoon wandering through the hills, getting hopelessly lost and taking way too many photos. i think i’ve officially captured the essence of valparaíso: a beautiful, chaotic mess. it’s exhausting, it’s exhilarating, and it’s utterly unforgettable.
I’m seriously considering just staying here forever. or at least until i run out of battery packs.
Seriously, if you’re looking for a place that’s completely different, a place that will challenge you and surprise you, valparaíso is it. just… be prepared for the hills. and the chaos. and the pigeons.
