Dust & Dissonance: A Week in Porthaven

okay, so, i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. porthaven. seriously? it sounds like a rejected Warhammer 40k planet. but honestly? it’s… something. i landed yesterday, and the air just smacks you. it’s like a damp wool blanket mixed with seaweed and something vaguely metallic. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the humidity’s clinging to everything - my kit, my hair, my sanity. 37% - ugh. the pressure’s at 1012, which is…fine, i guess? feels like 31.93.

my gear list is a disaster, obviously. i’m talking a busted cymbal, a drumstick that’s seen better decades, and a whole lot of duct tape. i swear, i’m a walking, talking percussion instrument of chaos. i needed to grab some new strings, so i hit up this little shop near the docks - ‘String Theory’ - it’s run by a guy named Silas who looks like he hasn’t slept since the 70s. he gave me some seriously drunk advice about tuning my kit using a rusty wrench. don’t do that. seriously.

I stumbled across this incredible street art scene - it’s all over the old warehouses. huge murals of kraken battling spaceships, portraits of grumpy-looking fishermen, the works. someone told me that the ‘Crimson Canvas’ collective is responsible for most of it. they’re pretty secretive, though. i tried to catch one of them painting, but they just vanished into a maze of alleyways.

Speaking of alleyways, the food scene is…interesting. i had this stew at ‘The Salty Spoon’ - it tasted vaguely of old boots and regret, but it warmed me up after wandering around in the drizzle. Yelp gives it 3 stars, which is generous, honestly. i heard that the owner, a woman named Moira, uses a secret ingredient - fermented herring. yeah.

Someone overheard me complaining about my drum kit and said, ‘Sounds like you need a good thrashing, son.’ I’m not sure if that was helpful or terrifying.

I spent a ridiculous amount of time wandering around the harbor, watching the fishing boats bobbing in the grey water. the locals are… intense. they’re all weathered faces and quiet stares. if you get bored, Porthaven’s Maritime Museum is worth a look, I guess. it’s mostly just old nets and rusty hooks, but it’s something.

I found a tiny little record store tucked away on a side street - ‘Vinyl Vortex’. the guy there, a skinny kid with bright purple hair, was obsessed with obscure krautrock bands. he kept rambling about the ‘sonic architecture’ of Neu! and Can. it was… a lot. i bought a scratched-up copy of ‘Autobahn’ purely for the aesthetic.

I’m heading out to explore the cliffs tomorrow - apparently, there’s a hidden cove with some amazing tide pools. i heard that the cliffs are haunted by the ghost of a lighthouse keeper who went mad after years of solitude. i’m not usually into that stuff, but hey, it’s porthaven.

Overall vibe: gritty, slightly unsettling, surprisingly beautiful in a bleak sort of way. i’m gonna need a bigger suitcase. and maybe a therapist. and definitely more coffee.

Check out Yelp for restaurant recommendations. And if you're looking for local events, the community board has a surprisingly active forum.
