Cold winds and warm stories: a weird day in treherne

the wind outside is brutal right now, feels like it's cutting straight through my jacket. i just checked and it's -5.76°c there, but with the wind chill it's closer to -10.51°c. if you're heading out, layer up. the air's dry too, 73% humidity, so your skin's gonna feel it.

i rolled into treherne thinking it'd be quiet, maybe a coffee shop and a couple of old buildings. instead, i found a town that felt like it was holding its breath. the main street's got that faded charm, paint peeling off the signs, but there's something honest about it. someone told me the diner at the corner used to be a bank, and the vault's still in the back. i didn't check, but i liked the idea.

if you get bored, winnipeg and brandon are just a short drive away, but honestly, treherne's got enough character to keep you busy for an afternoon. i spent an hour in the local museum, which is really just an old house stuffed with antiques and stories. the woman running it said she'd lived here her whole life and could name every family on the block. i believed her.

overheard a couple of locals at the gas station talking about the old train station. apparently, it's been abandoned for decades, but the tracks are still there, rusting under the snow. someone said they've seen deer walking along them at dusk. i didn't stick around to check, but it sounded like the kind of thing you'd want to see.

for food, the diner's the only real option, but that's part of the charm. the burger was simple, the coffee was hot, and the pie was homemade. if you're looking for fancy, keep driving. but if you want a story, pull up a stool.

i checked yelp for other spots and found a couple of mentions of a bakery that's only open on weekends. apparently, they do a mean butter tart. i missed it this time, but it's on the list for next trip.

if you're into slow travel, treherne's a good stop. not much happens here, but that's the point. it's the kind of place where you can hear yourself think, even when the wind's howling outside.

for more on the area, check out the treherne community page or browse tripadvisor for local tips.
