Chicago Chaos: 3601311 & Some Seriously Strange Vibes
okay, so. chicago. i landed here fueled by lukewarm coffee and the faint hope of not getting robbed blind. the numbers 3601311 and 1340354793? honestly, no clue where they came from. justā¦random. but they felt significant, you know? like a code to unlock something. the weather here is⦠something. i just checked and it's...a humid, clingy sort of warmth. 19.97 Celsius, feels like 20.11. humidity's at a solid 80%. definitely bringing a portable fan on future trips.
so, the city itself. itās a symphony of grit and gleaming skyscrapers. the air smells like deep dish pizza andā¦well, letās just say a certain industrial undertone. my little corner of *Wicker Park is buzzing. lots of vintage shops (already spent way too much), independent coffee places, and people who look like theyāre constantly plotting something.
first impression? intense.
Gear Essentials (because, let's be real):
*Reusable water bottle: seriously, stay hydrated.
*Comfortable walking shoes: youāll need them. trust me.
*Portable charger: your phone will die. repeatedly.
*A good map app: google maps is your friend (but donāt rely on it entirely - ask locals!).
*Small backpack: for all the random stuff youāll pick up.
the localsā¦they're a mixed bag. i overheard a guy at a little jazz club - seriously smoky, in the best way - say something about the best hidden speakeasies are down in Chinatown. said you have to know the right people, or, alternatively, follow the faint scent of dumplings.
āDonāt even think about ordering the Chicago-style hot dog without napkins. Seriously, itās a biohazard.ā - some guy at a bar who looked like heād seen things.
and the food! oh god, the food. iāve already had deep dish (itās a commitment), a truly amazing falafel sandwich from a street vendor (highly recommend!), and attempted to navigate the chaotic world of Chicago-style pizza. iām still not sure what the rules are, but itās delicious. i found a great review on Yelp for a place called Lou Malnati's - their deep dish is legendary, apparently.
i heard that the Art Institute of Chicago is amazing, but be prepared for crowds. someone told me that if you go early, you can almost have it to yourself.
iām trying to embrace the city's energy. itās relentless, a constant hum of activity. i walked along the Navy Pier* - touristy af, but the views of the lake are pretty great. someone warned me to be careful of pickpockets there; you know, standard travel advice.
the pressure here is 1015, humidity is weighing on everything, and the ground level is 902 feet so the air feels dense. i'm off to explore some more of this concrete jungle. maybe find a hidden gem or two. or at least figure out how to properly eat a Chicago-style hot dog. iām thinking of checking out Chicago Greeters - they offer free walking tours led by locals.
wish me luck! this city is definitely testing my capacity for caffeine and chaos. remember to check out Time Out Chicago for events and things to do.
