chasing light in whangarei: a photographer's ramble
i just looked outside and it's sitting at a steady warmth, hope you enjoy that sort of thing. today i wandered through whangarei with my camera slung low, chasing the way light leaks through the pohutukawa trees along the harbor. the air feels thick with salt and something sweet, like distant frangipani.
"you gotta shoot the tide pools at dawn, the colors go mental," a local surf shop owner muttered while wiping his hands on a rag.
"if you want a real taste of the north, try the pie at the bakery near the old railway, they say it’s been passed down three generations," whispered a barista as she handed me a flat white.
after the falls, i looped back through the town center, snapping shots of the vintage storefronts and the occasional street musician tuning up beside the fountain. the light started to fade, painting the wharf in gold and making the old warehouses look like they’re holding their breath.
if you feel like stretching your legs, the big smoke down south is only a couple hours away. auckland’s neon buzz feels like another world, but sometimes i need that contrast to remind myself why i love the slower pace up north.
Here’s a map to keep you oriented:
and a couple of frames from the day:
some links i found handy: check out the whangarei travel forum on tripadvisor here, peek at the local eateries on yelp here, and scroll through the community board on stuff.co.nz here.
that’s it for now - keep your lenses clean and your heart open.
