Bournemouth: Damp Socks and Unexpected Seagull Drama
okay, so. bournemouth. i didn’t plan to be here, honestly. my van decided it needed a dramatic breakdown just outside, and well, here i am. touring drummer life, right? always an adventure. i’m used to cramped vans and dodgy venues, but this… this is different.
I just checked and it’s drizzling sideways, a proper grey hug from the sky. feels like about seven degrees, which is… brisk. i’m wearing three layers and still feel like a damp sock. the locals seem unfazed, though. they’re all bundled up in Barbour jackets and sensible shoes, sipping tea and looking vaguely amused by my bewildered expression.
I’ve been wandering around, trying to soak up the atmosphere. *Bournemouth Pier is… well, it’s a pier. Lots of seagulls. Seriously, lots of seagulls. They’re aggressively friendly, bordering on menacing. I swear one of them tried to steal my sandwich. I’m pretty sure I saw it plotting. Someone told me that the seagulls here are notorious for their boldness. Apparently, they’ve been trained by tourists to expect handouts. Genius, really.
I stumbled across this little cafe, 'The Salty Siren' (check them out on Yelp: https://www.yelp.com/biz/the-salty-siren-bournemouth). It was packed with people, all huddled around steaming mugs. I got a ridiculously overpriced latte (because, you know, I’m a drummer, we’re used to being ripped off) and eavesdropped on some conversations.
“Apparently, that new art gallery on Poole Road is amazing. All local artists, apparently. Worth a look if you’re bored.”
“Don’t go near the Lower Gardens after dark. Heard some dodgy stuff going on. Just saying.”
Dodgy stuff? Intriguing. I’m not actively looking for trouble, but…
I spent a bit of time wandering around Alum Chine. It’s actually quite pretty, even in the drizzle. The beach is… grey. But the cliffs are nice. I found a little vintage shop, 'Retro Revival' (TripAdvisor: https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction_Review-g183063-d1177887-Reviews-Retro_Revival-Bournemouth_Dorset_England.html). Managed to snag a killer 80s band tee for a steal. Always a win.
I’m trying to find a decent pub with live music tonight. Apparently, 'The Richmond' is the place to be (check out their events page: https://www.therichmondbournemouth.co.uk/events/). Drunk advice from a guy at the cafe suggested it. He also told me to avoid the karaoke night. Wise words, i think.
If you get bored, Poole and Christchurch are just a short drive away. I might check them out tomorrow, depending on whether my van decides to cooperate. I’m also looking into some local drumming circles - always good to connect with other musicians. Found a forum here: https://www.bournemouth.gov.uk/news/community-events/music-bournemouth
Honestly, Bournemouth isn’t exactly setting the world on fire, but it’s… pleasant. A bit damp, a bit seagull-y, but pleasant. And hey, at least I have a story to tell. Plus, that band tee is amazing*.
