Berlin Bleeds: A Caffeine-Fueled Descent
okay, so, 3099213. that’s the timestamp on my phone, which is currently vibrating like a trapped wasp. 1616244076. doesn’t mean anything, really, just…there. i’m sitting in this tiny, aggressively hip cafe - ‘Kaffeehaus Klaus’ - and it smells like burnt sugar and regret. which, honestly, feels pretty on brand for Berlin.
I’m pretty sure I’ve consumed approximately 70% of the city’s coffee supply in the last 48 hours. it’s a survival tactic, obviously. i’m chasing a feeling, you know? a blurry, slightly manic energy. i’m not sure what i’m looking for, just…something. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. 11.15, feels like 9.91, temp min 11.15, temp max 11.15, pressure 1019, humidity 61, sea level 1019, grnd level 1006. the air is thick, like a damp wool blanket.
I stumbled across this place while wandering - which is basically my default mode of transportation - and it’s just…weird. in a good way. the barista, a guy named Felix with a permanent look of mild bewilderment, keeps offering me shots of espresso. he’s not wrong, though. i need them.
Someone told me that the best street art is found in the Kreuzberg district, but honestly, i’ve been mostly just observing the locals. they’re a strange bunch. a lot of intense staring, a lot of leather jackets, and a surprising number of people carrying incredibly elaborate umbrellas. if you get bored, Potsdam is just a short drive away. it’s…well, it’s Potsdam.
I spent yesterday getting hopelessly lost in the Hackesche Höfe, a series of interconnected courtyards filled with tiny shops and cafes. it’s like stepping into a Wes Anderson film, but with more pigeons. i ended up buying a ridiculously oversized scarf - it’s probably too warm for Berlin, but it felt right. i’m thinking of wearing it to the opera. maybe.
I overheard some guys at the bar last night - they were arguing about the merits of different types of sauerkraut - that the best currywurst in the city is at Curry 36. i’m skeptical, but i’m willing to investigate. i’m also pretty sure i saw a guy wearing a full suit of armor walking down the street. berlin, man.
I’m trying to document everything, of course. my camera roll is overflowing with blurry photos of graffiti, crumbling buildings, and people who look like they’ve seen too much. i’m not sure if any of it will actually be any good, but i’m compelled to try. i’m also desperately trying to avoid eye contact with anyone who looks like they might offer me unsolicited advice.
I found this amazing vintage shop near Friedrichstraße - ‘Secondhand Stories’ - it’s a chaotic mess of clothes and accessories from the 70s and 80s. i scored a killer leather jacket for a steal. it smells faintly of mothballs and rebellion. i’m thinking of incorporating it into my next performance.
I heard that the best way to experience Berlin is to just…get lost. to wander the streets without a plan, to stumble upon hidden gems, to embrace the chaos. it’s a city that rewards exploration, even if it’s occasionally overwhelming.
Seriously, though, the architecture is insane. brutalist concrete, ornate baroque facades, graffiti-covered walls - it’s a visual assault in the best possible way. i’m obsessed with the East Side Gallery, a section of the Berlin Wall that’s been transformed into an open-air art gallery. it’s a powerful reminder of the city’s history.
I’m starting to feel a little delirious. i need more coffee. and maybe a nap. but first, i’m going to find that currywurst.

And if you're looking for a good place to chill after all this, check out Prater Garten. It's a proper beer garden, you know?
Okay, gotta go. My phone’s about to die. wish me luck.
