Wellington in the Mist: A Drummer's Late-Night Wander

so here i am in wellington, new zealand, after a gig that went way too late. the city's still buzzing, but in that weird half-asleep way that makes everything feel like a dream. i just checked and it's 16°c right now, which is basically perfect hoodie weather. not too cold, not too warm, just enough to make you appreciate a good jacket.

woke up this morning to the sound of rain tapping on the window like someone trying to get my attention. classic wellington. the humidity's sitting at 86%, which means my hair's doing that thing where it decides to have a life of its own. not mad about it though - gives me that wild musician vibe, right?

headed down to cuba street because someone told me that's where all the good coffee is hiding. found this little place called *midnight espresso that stays open until like 3am. perfect for when you're wired after a show and need somewhere to crash with your laptop and bad decisions. the barista had this amazing sleeve tattoo of what looked like a drum kit, so we bonded over broken cymbals and bad backline gear.

heard a rumor that the cable car up to the botanical gardens is worth it even if you're not into plants. apparently the view of the harbor makes you forget about whatever's stressing you out. i'm not usually one for tourist traps, but the way the local described it made it sound more like a secret shortcut to seeing the whole city at once.

if you get bored,
auckland and christchurch are just a short drive away - okay, not really a short drive, more like a flight, but you get what i mean. wellington's got this compact energy where you can walk everywhere and still feel like you've seen a whole different city by lunchtime.

someone mentioned that the
te papa museum is free and actually worth your time, which is rare for museums. usually i'd rather be soundchecking, but the way they described the exhibits made it sound like a crash course in why new zealand is the way it is. might check it out before the next show if i can drag myself out of bed before noon.

right now i'm sitting in this tiny bar called
the matterhorn* that looks like it hasn't changed since the 70s, and i'm pretty sure that's exactly why it's perfect. the pressure's holding steady at 1016 hPa, which means the weather's probably going to stay as moody as a drummer who's been on tour too long. but that's wellington for you - always keeping you on your toes, just like a good rhythm section should.
