villareggio’s rain-soaked morning and why i still can’t decide if it’s worth it

i woke up to the sound of rain hitting the roof and my alarm clock drowning in soggy sheets. villareggio isn’t a place that makes grand entrances. it’s more like a friend who shows up late with a cup of cold coffee and a story about how it rained all night. the weather here is this weird in-between state. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. not too hot, not too cold, but enough to make you question all life choices. 88% humidity? yeah, it’s like the air is holding its breath and pretending it’s not.

when i first arrived, i thought i’d found a hidden gem. but then i realized the gem was a leaky tap in a hostel bathroom. the neighbors here? well, they’re the kind of people who leave their cars running in the driveway and play loud music at 3 am. if you get bored, florence is just a short drive away. i heard that from a local who was clearly drunk and trying to sell me a bootleg vinyl.

i overheard a conversation at the bus station where someone said the best place to eat here is this tiny cafe that serves pizza on a plate so small it feels like a dare. another person swore by a street vendor who claims to have the best espresso in the world. i’m not sure if that’s true or if they’re just trying to make me feel special. either way, the reviews are all over the place. i heard that the local museum is haunted, but i also heard it’s just a bunch of dusty relics and a guy who won’t stop talking about his goat.

anyway, let’s talk about the map. if you want to find your way around, this one’s probably your best bet.

it’s not perfect, but it’s better than asking 10 strangers for directions. plus, it’s got that hint of a glitch, which feels kinda authentic.

i took some photos during my walk. here’s one of a group of people standing on a beach next to a body of water. maybe they’re locals? maybe they’re tourists? who knows.

another shot of a white and blue boat on sea during daytime. it looked like it belonged in a postcard, but i’m pretty sure it was just a stranded ferry.

and this one? a silhouette of a woman standing on a sea shore during sunset. she looked like she was about to cry or maybe just really into the view.

someone told me that if you’re really desperate for a good time, you should check out the old dance club near the docks. i heard that the music is so bad it’s good. others said it’s a trap. i’m still deciding. but hey, at least the weather’s not trying to kill you. or is it? 12.96 degrees? yeah, that’s not a threat. unless you’re a snow lover. which i’m not.

so here’s the deal. villareggio is a place that makes you feel like you’re in a story. a messy, unpredictable one. where the weather is a character, the neighbors are chaotic, and the reviews are a mix of lies and half-truths. if you’re into that kind of thing, go for it. if not, maybe just stick to the beach. or don’t. i’m not your boss. just don’t forget to pack an umbrella. or a raincoat. or both.

p.s. check out the yelp page for this place. it’s got a 2.5-star rating, but i’m pretty sure that’s from someone who only left a one-star because they couldn’t find the Wi-Fi. and the tripadvisor reviews? they’re all over the map. literally. one person said it’s the best place to learn Italian. another said it’s a trap for tourists. i’m guessing both are right.

also, if you’re in the area, maybe stop by the local market. i heard that the cheese is amazing. or maybe it’s just me. who knows?
