Utila: A Tiny Island That Ate My Plans

so i landed on utila thinking i'd be here for like two nights. that was three weeks ago. this place does something to you. maybe it's the water that's always 26 degrees and feels like a warm hug, or maybe it's just that nobody here cares what you do as long as you're not bothering the fish.

i just checked and it's 25.79°c there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the humidity is sitting at 73%, which sounds bad until you're actually in it and realize it's just... wet air. like breathing underwater without the pressure.

anyway, utila isn't for everyone. it's this tiny speck off honduras where the main street is basically a dirt path and the biggest decision you make daily is whether to dive or eat baleadas for the third time. the locals? they're a mix of rastas, expats who forgot to leave, and divers who realized certification is cheaper here than anywhere else on earth.

"you haven't been to utila unless you've gotten lost on the way to underwater vision,"

someone told me at the bar. i believed them until i realized there are like three dive shops with similar names and all of them are good.

if you get bored, roatan and guanaja are just a short boat ride away, but honestly? good luck leaving. the ferry schedule is more of a suggestion and the vibe here makes time stretchy. i heard from a guy named carlos (who might've been drunk) that the best thing to do is rent a kayak at sunset and just paddle until you forget which direction you came from.

i keep telling myself i'll go to the north side tomorrow to check out the less-crowded beaches. but then someone mentions there's a full moon party at treetanic (yeah, that's an actual bar built in a tree) and suddenly my plans are toast again.

"the reef here? it's not the great barrier, but it's ours,"

a dive instructor said while we were gearing up. she wasn't wrong. the coral's a bit beat up from all the fins, but the fish don't seem to care. i saw an octopus yesterday that changed colors three times while staring at me like i owed it money.

random tips i've gathered:
- bring cash. the ATMs here have commitment issues.
- if a local offers you "mamajuana," just go with it.
- the best baleadas are sold out of a cart near the ferry dock at 2am.
- don't try to rent a scooter unless you're comfortable with gravel and your own mortality.

i've been writing this from a hammock strung between two palms, with a beer that cost less than a bottle of water back home. utila does that thing where it makes you question why you ever lived any other way. maybe i'll leave tomorrow. or maybe i'll just stay until the season changes and i turn into one of those people who gives directions to newcomers while pretending i've always been here.
