Stockholm's Static & the Search for a Decent Fika

okay, so stockholm. it’s…a lot. i landed with a thump, feeling like a crumpled airline blanket, and immediately noticed the air. it’s not cold, exactly, more like…actively disapproving of your existence. i just checked and it’s hovering around four point nine degrees celsius, but feels like two point nine, which is basically a personal insult from the weather gods. the pressure’s a solid one thousand and twenty-two, which honestly, feels about right for the general vibe.

i’m a freelance photographer, and i’m here chasing light, but mostly i’m chasing caffeine. seriously, the fika situation is crucial. i’ve been wandering around gamla stan, which is pretty, i guess, if you’re into cobblestones and feeling like you’ve stepped onto a movie set. it’s all very… curated.

someone told me that the coffee at a place called ‘kaffe’ is basically liquid gold, but you have to queue for an hour. i’m not an hour-queue kind of person. i’m a ‘wander aimlessly and hope for the best’ kind of person. i did stumble across a little bakery near stureplan, though. it smelled amazing, but the lady behind the counter looked at me like i’d personally offended her ancestors.

i’ve been trying to get a feel for the neighborhoods. södermalm is cool, very…effortlessly cool. like everyone just woke up looking amazing. i overheard someone complaining about the prices on a local forum (https://www.stockholmkalender.se/en/), saying it’s “basically london, but colder and with more blonde people.” which, honestly, feels pretty accurate.

the humidity is sixty-seven percent, which explains why my hair is doing things i didn’t know it could do. and the sea level is one thousand and twenty-two, but the ground level is one thousand and seventeen. i don’t know what that means, but it feels important.

i’m staying in an airbnb in vasastan. it’s…fine. the walls are thin, and i can hear the neighbors arguing about something involving meatballs and a missing remote control. if you get bored, uppsala and linköping are just a quick train ride away. i’ve been trying to find some good street art, but it’s surprisingly elusive. i did find a cool vintage shop on drottninggatan (https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g190569-Activities-Stockholm.html), though. scored a seriously amazing leather jacket.

i asked a guy at a record store for recommendations, and he just stared at me blankly before suggesting abba. which, okay, fair enough. but i was hoping for something a little less…iconic. i heard that there’s a hidden jazz club in norrmalm, but you need a secret password. i’m currently working on my password. it involves a moose and a very specific type of pastry.

honestly, stockholm is exhausting. it’s beautiful, but it’s also…demanding. it wants you to earn its affection. i’m starting to think i need a vacation from my vacation. maybe i’ll just find that liquid gold coffee and hide in a corner. you can find more info about Stockholm here: https://www.visitstockholm.com/ and check out some reviews on Yelp: https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=Restaurants&find_loc=Stockholm. i’m also checking out this local blog: https://www.thelocal.se/.
