San Francisco Static: Rain, Ramen, and Really Weird Vibes
okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on caffeine and regret. 5400075 and 1840021573… honestly, those numbers just keep swirling around in my head like a broken record. i landed in san francisco yesterday, and it’s… intense. like, aggressively intense. the air smells like salt and something vaguely metallic, and the fog is so thick you can practically taste it. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.
I’m staying in a tiny room above a ramen shop - “Dragon’s Breath” - which is both a blessing and a curse. the noodles are phenomenal, but the guy who runs it, mr. chen, keeps yelling at me to turn down my drum fills. i’m a touring session drummer, you know? it’s a thing. i’m trying to capture the sound of this place, the way the rain drums on the corrugated iron roofs, the distant wail of a siren… it’s a chaotic symphony.
Pressure’s 1025, humidity 88, sea level 1025, ground level 1006. it’s… stable. unsettlingly stable. like the city itself is holding its breath. i wandered down to fisherman’s wharf earlier, dodging tourists and aggressive seagulls. someone told me that the sourdough bread here is legendary, but i’m more interested in finding a decent dive bar. i need something with sticky floors and a jukebox.
I stumbled across a little gallery in the Mission District - ‘Chromatic Echoes’ - showcasing this artist, Silas Blackwood. his stuff is… unsettling. huge, swirling canvases filled with neon colors and distorted faces. it felt like looking into a fever dream. i overheard a drunk advice from a guy nursing a beer at the bar next door: "Don’t trust anyone who says they ‘get’ san francisco. they don’t."
Speaking of locals, the neighbors are… interesting. there’s this family who live across the street - the morenos - they’re always playing mariachi music at 3 am. and then there’s old man harrison, who spends his days feeding pigeons and muttering about government conspiracies. if you get bored, oakland is just a short drive away. i’m thinking of checking out the murals there tomorrow.
I’m trying to build a gear list for my next tour. essentials: my sticks (obviously), a noise-canceling headset (mr. chen is a menace), a portable recorder, and a ridiculously large bottle of water. and a backup battery pack - because, you know, technology.
I heard that the best ramen in the city is at “Ramen Riot” - but it’s always packed. i’m also trying to find a good place to get a decent cup of coffee. i’m a coffee snob, don’t judge. i need something with a rich, dark roast and a serious crema. i found a place called “The Grindstone” - it’s pretty good, but the barista keeps calling me ‘dude.’
Seriously, this city is a mess. a beautiful, chaotic, slightly terrifying mess. but that’s what i’m here for, right? to document the weirdness. i’m linking to TripAdvisor for some restaurant recommendations: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g33837-San_Francisco_California.html and Yelp for some local haunts: https://www.yelp.com/directory/San-Francisco-CA. And for a local board with events, check this out: https://www.eventbrite.com/d/ca--san-francisco/. Don’t forget to check out the Golden Gate Bridge - it’s… well, it’s the Golden Gate Bridge. It’s iconic.
I’m going to go find another ramen bowl. wish me luck.
