Rotterdam Rumble: Rain, Ramen, and Seriously Weird Art

okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. 2904789 and 1276244190 - don’t ask, it’s a thing i saw on a wall. it just…is. the temp was 17.72 feels like 16.67, min 16.45, max 18.6, pressure 1024, humidity 43, sea level 1024, ground level 1008. basically, a damp, slightly chilly hug. i landed in Rotterdam yesterday and honestly? it’s…a lot. like, a beautiful, chaotic, slightly unsettling lot.

I’m a touring session drummer, so my priority is finding decent rehearsal spaces, but Rotterdam’s got this weird, almost aggressively modern vibe. It’s like someone took all the brutalist architecture and then decided to throw in a whole bunch of street art. Seriously, the street art is insane. I spent three hours just wandering around the Delfshaven area, dodging scooters and trying not to trip over discarded skateboards.

I overheard some drunk advice at a tiny ramen place near the Markthal - someone told me that the best way to experience the city is to just get lost. Apparently, that’s how you stumble upon the hidden courtyards and the really weird sculptures. I’m taking that to heart. I just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

Speaking of weird, the *Cube Houses are something else. They look like giant, brightly colored Lego blocks, and they’re actually living spaces. It’s…a lot to process. I also checked out the Boijmans Van Beuningen museum - the collection is huge, and the building itself is a masterpiece of brutalist design. It’s a bit overwhelming, but worth it if you’re into art.

I’m staying in a hostel in the city center - it’s pretty basic, but the other travelers are cool. There’s this guy, Liam, who’s a freelance photographer and he’s been telling me all about the local music scene. Apparently, Rotterdam has a thriving underground scene, with a lot of experimental electronic music and noise rock. I’m definitely checking that out.

I heard that the
Euromast offers incredible views of the city, but it’s super touristy. I’m trying to avoid the crowds, but it’s hard to escape the tourist trail in a place like this. If you get bored, Amsterdam is just a short drive away.

Seriously, the rain is relentless. It’s a constant drizzle, but it adds to the atmosphere, somehow. It’s like the city is perpetually shrouded in a misty, melancholic glow. I’m thinking of grabbing some fries from a street vendor - they look amazing.

Pro-Tip: Don’t be afraid to wander off the beaten path. Rotterdam is full of hidden gems, if you’re willing to look for them. And definitely try the stroopwafels - they’re ridiculously good.

Another Pro-Tip: Bring a waterproof jacket. Seriously.

Final Word:* Rotterdam is weird, it’s wonderful, and it’s definitely worth a visit. Just be prepared for the rain and the crowds. And don’t ask me about 2904789 and 1276244190. It’s a long story.
