puerto natales: where the vintage finds are as damp as the air

okay so i’m in puerto natales right now and let me tell you, this place hits different. the air’s so thick you could knit a sweater from it - 88% humidity clinging to every surface like a second skin. *puerto natales is basically a damp hug from a moss-covered giant. i just checked and it’s… this constant 13.02°C that somehow feels colder, like the wind’s whispering ‘gotcha’ down your collar. if you’re coming, bring a jacket that thinks it’s a sleeping bag. seriously, the pressure’s 1017 hPa, which i’m pretty sure means the sky’s holding its breath waiting to rain. but hey, the vintage shops here are wild. found a 70s poncho yesterday that smelled like campfire and regret - exactly what i needed.

the vibe here is… chaotic in the best way. locals move at glacier pace, which works for me because i’m hunting for hidden gems. someone told me about this warehouse near the bus station where the owner sleeps in a hammock surrounded by deadstock 90s jackets. also heard whispers that the best leather boots are in a shop that only takes cash and looks like it hasn’t seen sunlight since the ice age.

Glaciers and mountains in a serene lake.

if you get bored staring at the
torres del paine (which are basically nature’s skyscrapers), el calafate’s just a couple hours north. i took a bus that smelled like diesel and cheap empanadas - worth it for the view though.

A lone hiker ascends a rocky mountain trail.

pro tip: the
museo histórico* has a vintage textile exhibit that’ll make you weep into your boots. also, this bakery near the water serves pastries so good they should be illegal. check out this yelp list but ignore the reviews about ‘too many pastries’ - that’s not a thing here. someone swore the soup kitchen near the docks serves the best fish stew, but i think they were just drunk.

anyway, the humidity’s wrecking my leather jacket, but the finds are worth it. here’s a tripadvisor thread arguing about whether kayaking or vintage hunting is more ‘authentic’. honestly? just wear waterproof everything and bring cash. the end.
