Prague Through a Rainy Lens: Cobblestones and Coffee Confessions
another day, another continent, another camera strap digging into my shoulder. landed in prague yesterday feeling like a damp tea bag after lugging gear through three airports. this city’s got bones like a gothic cathedral - all spires and shadows. *old town square is basically a giant historical flashbulb explosion, seriously overwhelming the senses.
i just checked the weather and it’s that kind of damp chill that seeps into your bones, but hey, at least it’s not raining sideways. yet. the locals are either wrapped in wool like they’re preparing for an arctic expedition or shivering in thin jackets like they forgot this isn’t california. found this incredible hole-in-the-wall cafe near charles bridge where the barista gave me free shots of slivovitz because i mentioned i was shooting the bridge at dawn.
someone told me the real magic is at 4 am when the city’s still asleep and the fog rolls in. but don’t tell anyone, that’s my secret spot.
if you run out of things to shoot, vienna and berlin are just a train ride away. but honestly? prague has this weird energy that feels stuck in time, even with the tourists. john lennon wall is covered in graffiti like a living diary.
i heard a local whisper that the best coffee in town is in a basement cafe that doesn’t even have a sign. just look for the door with peeling paint and knock three times.
tried shooting prague castle* at golden hour but got chased by a goose. no joke, this honking demon decided my tripod was its enemy. almost dropped my camera. thank god for image stabilization. check out the castle on tripadvisor if you want more goose-free advice. also found this hidden beer garden that serves trdelnÃk with actual fire - no, not the fake kind. real fire. like, you might singe your eyebrows fire.
a drunk artist at karaoke last night swore the river vltava’s reflection at midnight holds cursed photographs. he showed me his phone. it was just blurry night shots.
wandering these cobblestones feels like hunting ghosts with a lens. every corner’s a story. even if the locals think i’m weird for photographing drainage grates. prague’s official tourism board has decent maps though. just ignore their ‘best photo spots’ list - those places are tourist traps where you’ll fight for a shot with fifty selfie sticks.
