new orleans and that weird 14-degree chill i’m into it
i woke up this morning to the sound of a saxophone playing itself somewhere outside my window. not sure if it’s a dream or a neighborhood secret but i’m going with secret. the weather’s like, 14.97 degrees right now which is the kind of cold that makes you reconsider everything. i just checked and it’s like that, hope you like that kind of thing. not too hot not too cold just this weird middle ground where you either bundle up or pretend you’re not freezing.
my neighbor’s cat keeps walking through my trash can. i don’t know if it’s a prank or if the cat thinks it’s part of the block party. either way it’s a vibe. if you get bored baton rouge is like a 30 minute drive away and they’ve got that whole expo new orleans thing going on. i heard that from a tourist who probably got lost and ended up in a philosophy discussion about french casseroles.
someone told me that the jazz club on broad is actually owned by a ghost. i don’t know if that’s true but the bartender won’t serve me a drink without a valid id. maybe that’s related. i also heard that the street artist who painted that giant crawfish on bleak street is actually a retired chef. made sense to me. he was flipping burgers the other day and then boom-art.
i’m not sure if this place is magical or just really good at pretending. the weather, the neighbors, the whole shebang. i took a picture of a guy playing electric guitar in a grayscale photo. he looked like he’d rather be anywhere else. that’s the kind of energy i’m chasing.
i’m not a fan of the humidity. it’s like the air is trying to stick to your skin. 39% humidity right now. not a big deal but i’m wearing a sweater and still sweating. if you’re visiting check out the local board for that weird food truck that serves beignets in a toaster. some ghost told me about it. i’m not sure if that’s true.
i’m trying to find a good coffee shop but everyone’s either playing yelp or pretending they’re not open. tripadvisor says this place is a hidden gem but i’m not sure if it’s the food or the rumors. yelp says the same thing. both are probably wrong. people love to bomb places on yelp. like, someone left a one star because the waiter didn’t speak their language. which is fair. but also weird.
i think new orleans is the kind of place where you have to actively choose not to be bored. there’s always something happening even if it’s just a cat dragging a trash bag through your yard. the weather’s odd but it adds character. the rumors? they’re part of the charm. i heard that the mayor once tried to sell the french quarter to a pirate. didn’t work. probably because he was too distracted by the smell of beignets.
if you’re into chaotic energy this is the spot. it’s messy. it’s loud. it’s 14 degrees and you’re wearing socks with sandals. that’s the new orleans way.
