Munich's Murky Charm: A Drummer's Damp Dispatch

okay, so. munich. right? everyone raves about it. beer gardens, castles, lederhosen… it’s all very picturesque, i get it. but i’m a touring drummer, not a postcard. i’m here for the gigs, the vibe, and honestly, a decent schnitzel. and let me tell you, the vibe is… interesting.

i just checked and it’s… drizzling sideways. like, seriously. the kind of drizzle that seeps into your bones and makes you question all your life choices. it’s hovering around seven degrees, feels like seven, and the pressure’s steady. humidity’s a killer, though - eighty-one percent. makes my drums feel like they’re gonna sprout moss. i’m staying near the *Isar River, which is pretty, if you ignore the slightly unsettling grey hue everything has.

my gig was… something. a small jazz club called “The Blue Note” (original, i know). the sound guy was a character. kept insisting my snare sounded “too… energetic.” energetic! i’m a drummer! that’s kind of the point. i overheard a couple arguing about whether pretzels are a breakfast food. apparently, it’s a
very serious debate here.

“Don’t even think about ordering a Weißwurst after noon. It’s bad luck, apparently. And the pigeons… watch the pigeons. They’re organized.”

seriously, the pigeons are intense. they’ve got a whole system going on. i swear i saw one directing traffic.

if you get bored, salzburg and innsbruck are just a short drive away. i might take a day trip. need to escape the damp and the pigeon overlords for a bit.

food. okay, let’s talk food. schnitzel was decent. found a little place near the Marienplatz that wasn’t completely overrun by tourists. it’s called “Zum Augustiner” - check it out if you’re in the area. TripAdvisor has some mixed reviews, but i thought it was solid.

“The beer is good, but the service is… glacial. Like, bring-your-own-patience glacial.”

that’s pretty accurate, actually. but the beer
is good. i’ve been sticking to the local brews - mostly Helles and Weißbier. trying to blend in, you know?

getting around. the U-Bahn is surprisingly efficient. easy to navigate, even for a sleep-deprived drummer like myself. i used the MVV app - it’s pretty handy. MVV Website.

“Don’t try to haggle at the markets. They’ll look at you like you’ve grown a second head.”

true story. i tried to get a discount on some sausages. big mistake. the vendor gave me the stink eye.

things to do besides dodging pigeons and drinking beer. well, there’s the Deutsches Museum, which is apparently huge. i’m not really a museum person, but maybe i’ll check it out if i’m desperate. there’s also the Hofbräuhaus*, which is… an experience. Yelp has a ton of reviews - mostly about the crowds and the oompah bands.

my gear list is pretty standard: sticks, brushes, a few snares, a ride cymbal that’s seen better days, and a whole lot of earplugs. i’m also carrying a small umbrella - essential for surviving the munich drizzle.

overall? munich is… fine. it’s not blowing my mind, but it’s not terrible either. it’s got a certain… stoic charm. a quiet resilience. like a really damp, slightly grumpy cat. i’m looking forward to the next gig, and maybe a slightly warmer day. and definitely fewer pigeons.
