Medellín: Chasing Coffee & Chaos in Colombia's Eternal Spring

medellín hits different. like, you land and immediately feel the altitude in your chest but also this weird electric buzz in the air. maybe it's the coffee. maybe it's the people. or maybe it's just that i've been awake for 36 hours and everything feels cinematic.

i just checked and it's 15.71°C there right now, feels like 15.63°c. so basically sweater weather forever. if you're into that "i need a jacket but also want to wear shorts" vibe, you're golden.

anyway, first thing i did was wander into this tiny cafe in el poblado. no sign. just a wooden door with a sticker that said "café aquí." inside, this guy named carlos was roasting beans on a portable burner like he was performing surgery. i asked him what's good and he just pointed at the chalkboard. everything was in spanish. i pointed at random. best decision ever.

"the tourists never order the tinto. they want frappés. but tinto? that's the soul." - overheard from the barista

i heard that the comuna 13 graffiti tour is overrated now. too many influencers, not enough heart. but then again, someone else told me the opposite. so who knows. i went anyway. it was beautiful. chaotic. full of stories painted on walls. and yes, there were influencers. but also abuelas selling agua de panela from their windows.

if you get bored, bogotá and cartagena are just a short drive away. though "short" in colombia might mean five hours and three police checkpoints. totally worth it.

i stayed in a hostel that smelled like lemongrass and regret. the guy in the bunk above me snored like a chainsaw. but the view from the rooftop? unreal. you could see the whole valley lit up like a circuit board at night.

random tips i learned the hard way:
- *metro cables are not just transport. they're a free scenic ride over the city.
-
arepas are not all created equal. some are fluffy. some are sad hockey pucks. roll the dice.
-
spanish* helps. even bad spanish. people appreciate the effort.

i kept thinking about how this place used to be dangerous. like, really dangerous. and now it's just...alive. buzzing. full of art and rhythm and people who look you in the eye when they talk. it's not perfect. but it's real.

if you're into that kind of thing, check out tripadvisor's guide to medellín or maybe yelp for local eats. but honestly? just show up. get lost. talk to strangers. that's where the magic is.
