Mbale, Uganda: My Camera Got Foggy and My Mind Got Clear
i've been chasing light in mbale for three days now, and i'm starting to think the clouds here are alive. they roll over mount elgon like lazy giants, spilling rain in sudden bursts that soak my camera bag before i can even zip it. the thermometer reads a steady 20.11°c, but the humidity sits at 73% - my lens fogged up more times than i'd like to admit. the weather's doing its own thing, and honestly, i'm not mad at it.
here's where i'm perched:
mbale's streets are a patchwork of corrugated iron roofs and banana trees, with motorbike taxis zooming past like wasps. i've been lugging around a beat-up canon 5d mark iv and a 24-70mm f/2.8, and i swear the humidity's doing number on the mirror. i store it in a plastic bag with silica packets between shots, which feels ridiculous but hey, the shots are sharp.
i heard from a bartender at the 'bush house' that the best light for the mt. elgon sunrise is from the 'sani lodge' balcony, but only if you order their ginger tea. i bundled up and climbed there at 5am, and yeah, the tea was overpriced but the light? unreal. check out this tripadvisor discussion on mbale viewpoints - locals spill some secrets there.
if you get bored, jinja's white-water rapids are a two-hour drive east, and the kenyan border town of busia is a quick trot west - perfect for a change of scenery and a different set of street food.
i spent a morning at the central market, where women sell fresh pineapples and hand-carved masks. i was warned by a fellow photographer that the 'market kings' will charge you double if you look like a tourist. i kept my camera hidden until i found a shy orange vendor who let me capture her hands weaving baskets. she laughed when i showed her the preview, said my camera looked older than her father. there's a great yelp page for mbale's best coffee spots that saved me from caffeine withdrawal.
later that afternoon i hiked up to the 'mbale viewpoint' - a rocky outcrop that overlooks the entire valley. the sky cleared just in time for golden hour, and i managed to grab this shot:
the colors were insane - greens i didn't know existed, and the setting sun painted mt. elgon in silhouette. i felt like i'd stumbled into a painting. that night i went to a local joint called 'the red chair' for dinner. someone told me their chapati is legendary, but the real draw is the live music on tuesdays. i missed that, but the vibe was still buzzing.
i overheard a couple of backpackers swearing that the 'mbale night market' has the best street food after dark. i tried the rolex (that's an omelette rolled in a chapati) and yeah, it lived up to the hype. for more on the street food scene, see this local blog post - it's a bit outdated but the recommendations still stand.
the next morning i woke up to the sound of rain on my tin roof. the humidity was 73% again, and the streets glistened. i grabbed my camera and went to find some reflections. this puddle near the bus park captured the chaos of colors:
i love how mbale doesn't try to be polished. it's raw, a little messy, and that's what makes it photogenic. the people are warm, even if they sometimes haggle over prices. i left my camera unattended for five minutes while i bought a water bottle, and when i came back, a kid had taken a selfie with it. he was so proud he showed me the blurry pic. i laughed, gave him a candy, and we became friends.
i met this elderly woman who sold groundnuts on the corner. her smile was the kind that lights up a room. i asked if i could take her portrait, and she nodded solemnly. here's the result:
mbale, you've taught me to embrace the humidity, the unexpected rain, and the joy of connecting with strangers through a lens. i'm heading out tomorrow with a memory card full of shots and a heart a little fuller. if you ever get the chance, swing by. just pack a rain cover and an open mind.
