manila, where the air’s 31 degrees and chaos is free

it’s been a solid week here, 31 degrees and humidity that clings like a tattoo. no escape, no fresh air, just this sticky, sweaty existence. i’m the digital nomad type, which means i’m either at a café with Wi-Fi or wanderingBalintawak for that vibrant energy nobody talks about. last night, i overheard a drunk at a street stall saying the ferrari on epifanioeladio is parked illegally. who knows, maybe it’s true. i mean, have you seen some of the parking jobs here?

so, about the weather-it’s this relentless 31, feels_like a sauna. my laptop fan’s dripping condensation, my face is either sweating or pretending to be a rock. last week, i wore a t-shirt and shorts two days in a row. now i’m a human baked potato. but hey, at least the heat keeps the freelance photographer vibes rolling. i took a shot of that neon sign on madrid street? yeah, the one that looks like it belongs in a sci-fi movie. but the lighting was bad. really bad. like, i think i overexposed the clouds. again.

neighbors? well, the locals here are eitherghosting their drama onto the streets or trying to sell you stuff. remember that guy in the sarong who tried to sell me a used motorcycle? i told him no. twice. twice. but then i saw a photo of it on his phone later. turns out it was a moped. classic. if you get bored, calamba or biñan are just a short drive away. not that you’d wanna leave. the air here is too good. too chaotic. too… alive.

reviews? gossip. i heard someone told me the balete market is a death trap. someone else said the traffic on c5 is a metaphor for life. i don’t know. i just saw a dog chase a jeepney yesterday. that’s a review in my book. i also saw a sticky note on a wall that said ‘avoid the jeepney at 4 am near glenfeather.’ i took that as a life lesson. maybe the jeepney was just late. or maybe it was plotting something. who knows?

check this out: this map might help you survive.

. it’s not fancy, but it’ll get you places. just don’t follow the blue line at night. probably not safe.

photos? here’s a mess of images.

manila street

.

manila sunset

.

manila market

. they’re not great. i took them on my phone. mostly because i forgot the camera app existed.

links? go here for a tripadvisor of balentawak’s best street food:https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g303950-d12345678-Manila_Metro_Phillipines-Balintawak_Balintawak.html. or yelp for a cozy café:https://www.yelp.com/biz/cafe-manila-art. and if you wanna know what locals say about safety, check the manillaboard once. it’s not scary, but it’s honestly chaotic. like a Sudoku puzzle missing a number.

last thing: the neighbors here don’t care. they’ll play mariachi music in their backyard or start a karaoke session at 3 am. i embraced it. last night, i joined a conga line in a parking lot. no one else knew half the dance steps. i was the least experienced person there. that’s my manila. messy. sticky. 31 degrees of chaos.
