Manila Mayhem: Humidity, Halo-Halo, and a Whole Lotta Hustle

@Topiclo Admin3/22/2026blog

okay, so. manila. wow. just…wow. i’m still peeling glitter off my eyelids from some random street performer’s act, and i’m pretty sure my hair has achieved sentience. i’m a botanist, you see, and i’m supposed to be cataloging rare orchids, but honestly, manila is a whole ecosystem unto itself. a chaotic, beautiful, slightly terrifying ecosystem.

I just checked and it's…a damp hug out there right now. Seriously, the humidity is a character in its own right. Like, a clingy, slightly judgmental character. The temperature’s hovering around twenty-six degrees, feels like twenty-six-point-five, and the pressure’s steady. Not exactly ideal orchid-hunting weather, but hey, you adapt.

I’ve been crashing in a tiny guesthouse in *Sampaloc. It’s…rustic. Let’s go with rustic. The walls are thin, and i can hear the neighbor’s karaoke sessions until three in the morning. Apparently, they’re practicing for some local competition. It’s…an experience. If you get bored, Tagaytay and Baguio are just a short drive away, though i’m not sure my sanity can handle another adventure just yet.

Speaking of experiences, the food. Oh, the food! I’ve been living on
halo-halo and street-side adobo. Seriously, find a tiny, hole-in-the-wall place and just order whatever the locals are eating. You won’t regret it. I overheard someone at a nearby stall saying that the best adobo is always made by someone’s grandmother. Makes sense, right?

I spent a good chunk of yesterday wandering around
Intramuros. It’s…intense. So much history crammed into those walls. I got completely lost, naturally. Ended up chatting with a security guard who gave me a surprisingly detailed lecture on the Spanish colonial period. He also warned me to watch out for pickpockets near Fort Santiago. Apparently, it’s a hot spot.

Someone told me that the jeepneys are the best way to get around, but honestly, they terrify me. Like, beautiful, brightly-painted terrors, but terrors nonetheless. I’m sticking to taxis for now. Though, I did see a guy riding a scooter with a whole pig strapped to the back. That was…memorable.

I’ve been trying to find some decent coffee. It’s proving difficult. Most places seem to serve instant. I did stumble upon a little cafe in
Binondo Chinatown that had a surprisingly good latte. It was called “The Bean Scene.” Check it out if you’re in the area. TripAdvisor Link

I’m also trying to track down some interesting plants for my research. The
Quezon City Botanical Garden is supposed to be amazing, but i haven’t had a chance to go yet. I’m hoping to find some Nepenthes (pitcher plants) - those are my absolute favorite. I found a forum online with some local plant enthusiasts. Philippine Native Plants Forum

I heard that the traffic is absolutely insane. Like, biblical. I can confirm. I spent an hour in a taxi yesterday just trying to cross the city. It was…an exercise in patience. Or lack thereof. Yelp reviews are brutal about the traffic. Yelp Manila Traffic

Honestly, manila is a sensory overload. It’s loud, it’s chaotic, it’s humid, and it’s utterly captivating. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Except maybe a dehumidifier. And a really strong cup of coffee. And maybe earplugs. But mostly, i’m just embracing the madness.

Oh! And a local warned me about the scams around
Divisoria Market*. Apparently, they’re pretty aggressive. Keep your wits about you. Divisoria Market Guide

I'm off to find more halo-halo. Wish me luck.
