Manila Mayhem: A Botanist's Unexpected Adventure (and a LOT of Humidity)

okay, so. manila. i wasn’t planning on manila. i was supposed to be in Borneo, cataloging pitcher plants, you know, the usual. but a freak monsoon rerouted my flight, and suddenly i’m here, sweating through my khaki pants, surrounded by…well, a lot.

I just checked and it's…a damp hug right now. Eighty-five percent humidity. My hair is actively rebelling. My notebook is practically dissolving. It’s…an experience. I’m staying in *Sampaloc, which is…busy. Very busy. Like, a constant, low-level hum of scooters and vendors and people just existing. It’s not quiet, let’s just say that.

I’m trying to find some interesting flora, obviously. The
Botanical Garden is a must, naturally. It’s surprisingly peaceful, a little oasis amidst the chaos. I spent a good few hours there, sketching some orchids and trying to identify a particularly aggressive-looking vine. Apparently, it’s called Tetrastigma pierrei - sounds terrifying, right? I’m also checking out the Quezon City Memorial Circle, heard there are some decent trees there too.

Someone told me that the traffic is…an acquired taste. They weren’t wrong. It’s less “traffic” and more “organized chaos.” I tried taking a jeepney - that was…an adventure. A very crowded, very loud adventure. I think I ended up three neighborhoods away from where I wanted to be, but hey, I saw some things.

I overheard some drunk advice at a
carinderia (those little roadside eateries - seriously, try the adobo!) - apparently, if you want to avoid getting ripped off by a taxi driver, download the Grab app. Smart. I’m on it. Also, someone else warned me about pickpockets in Divisoria. Noted. Keeping my notebook close.

If you get bored,
Tagaytay is just a short drive away. Apparently, the views of Taal Volcano are incredible. Might have to make a day trip of it.

Here’s a quick rundown of what I’ve packed (because, you know, botanist life):

Field notebook (currently damp)
Sketching pencils (HB, 2B, 4B - gotta capture those details)
Magnifying glass (essential for tiny flowers)
Insect repellent (the mosquitoes are relentless)
Wide-brimmed hat (sun protection is key)
Water bottle (hydration is crucial in this humidity)
Rain jacket (because, manila weather)
Phrasebook (my Tagalog is…limited)

I’m also trying to find some local markets to see what interesting plants people are growing in their backyards. I found a promising-looking stall near
Binondo Chinatown - apparently, they sell everything from orchids to medicinal herbs. I’ll report back on that.

For anyone else thinking of visiting, check out TripAdvisor for some general tips. And Yelp (https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=restaurants&find_loc=Manila%2C+Philippines) is your friend for finding decent food. I’m also browsing this local forum for insider info. Wish me luck - and send dry air!

Oh, and I almost forgot! I saw a street artist near
Intramuros doing incredible murals. Seriously, check it out if you’re into that sort of thing. He was using spray paint and stencils - really impressive. I’m thinking of trying to get a commission done… maybe a portrait of a pitcher plant?

I'm also looking into some historical tours of
San Agustin Church* - it's supposed to be amazing. Here's a link for more info.
