Lysekil, Sweden: Fog, Seagulls, and the Mystery of 2663536
just got here and lysekil is everything i didn't expect. the fog is so thick i could taste it, and it tastes like cold fish and regret. weather's 8.85°c but feels like 6.79, humidity 77% - my camera lens is constantly weeping. pressure 1023, which my weather app says is high, but all i know is my joints are complaining.
i've been chasing light for years, but here the light is shy, hiding behind clouds like a kid who forgot their homework. the numbers on my gps are crazy: 2663536 and 1752263370. i think my device is haunted. google says we're at 56.8837,14.8167, so i'll trust that.
see that wooden dock? that's where i set up my tripod and almost got washed away by a 'small' wave.
the wood is slick with algae and the ghosts of dead fishermen.
i asked a local about the best photo spots. he mumbled something about 'old town' and walked away. great. later, i found this bird beach and shot these seagulls at dawn.
they were unimpressed with my presence, just pecking at the sand like i was part of the scenery.
weather update: temp min 7.88, max 9, so no surprises, just a consistent chill that makes your nose run and your photos moody. i love it. if you like sun-kissed beaches, you'll hate it here. but if you love grays and blues, this is paradise.
neighbors? if you get bored, gothenburg is a couple hours away by bus, but why would you leave? the archipelago is calling with its silent islands. i heard on the local board that stenungsund has cool rock formations, but i'm too busy getting lost here.
reviews as gossip: someone told me the fish market opens at 5am and the first catch is the best. i went at 5:30 and it was already sold out. another warning: the 'kalkons' restaurant has the best shellfish, but it's cash only and the owner hates tourists. i paid with coins and a smile. check tripadvisor for more: TripAdvisor.
i spent hours in a cafe called 'cafe havangan', drinking terrible coffee and editing photos. the wifi was slow, but the view of the harbor was worth it. yelp says it's 'authentic', which means no frills, just grit. Yelp.
i keep seeing these weird numbers: 2663536 and 1752263370. maybe it's the area code for the secret fishing spots? or my sd card is failing? i asked a tech guy and he just shrugged. swedish minimalism, i guess.
another piece of gossip: the mushroom season is starting, and the forests are full of weird fungi. i saw this photo and had to include it for the weirdness factor:
. tilt shift makes everything look miniature, which fits because i feel like a tiny ant in this big, damp world.
i've been here four days and i've shot over 10,000 photos, but only 12 are keepers. that's lysekil for you - beautiful but demanding. the light changes every five minutes, and the fog rolls in like a thief.
if you come, bring waterproof everything. i learned that my 'water-resistant' jacket is just water-resentful. also, get a local sim card; my roaming charges are giving me anxiety. the local board lysekil.nu has tips on events and weather: Lysekil.nu.
in the end, lysekil is a place that grows on you like moss on a rock. it's cold, confusing, and the numbers don't add up, but it's real. i'm leaving tomorrow, and i already miss the sound of the gulls and the smell of wet wood. come visit, but check the weather first - it's 8.85 degrees out there, hope you like that kind of thing.
