Lviv's Got a Weird Vibe (and I'm Here for It)
okay, so lviv. i didn't really know what to expect, honestly. i just saw a number - 704617 - and thought, ‘let’s go there.’ and then another one, 1804093604, which felt…significant? i don’t know. maybe i’m losing it. the weather? i just checked and it’s drizzling, a sort of persistent, damp hug. hope you like that kind of thing. it’s hovering around 4 degrees celsius, feels like 2. not exactly beach weather, but cozy sweater weather, right?
I’m a touring session drummer, so my life is a constant blur of airports and questionable hotel breakfasts. But lviv…lviv is different. It’s got this…old soul thing going on. Like, seriously old. The architecture is insane - a mishmash of baroque, art nouveau, and just…stuff. I spent a good hour just staring at a building with a ridiculously ornate balcony.
I’ve been wandering around the Old Town, which is, predictably, full of tourists. But even with the crowds, there’s this undercurrent of…something. A quietness, maybe? It’s hard to explain. I stumbled upon this tiny little cafe, tucked away on a side street. The coffee was…okay. But the atmosphere? Perfect. I overheard a couple arguing in Ukrainian about pierogi. Classic.
Someone told me that the chocolate shops here are legendary. Apparently, Lviv is obsessed with chocolate. I haven’t fully investigated yet, but I’m on it. I did find this place called Lviv Handmade Chocolate - https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g297715-d726888-Reviews-Lviv_Handmade_Chocolate-Lviv_Lviv_Oblast.html. It’s…intense. Like, a chocolate museum meets a candy store. My dentist is going to kill me.
I’m staying in a little Airbnb near Rynok Square. The host, Olena, is lovely. She keeps offering me homemade nalysnyky. I’m pretty sure she thinks I’m starving. If you get bored, Krakow and Budapest are just a short train ride away. Seriously, check out https://www.rome2rio.com/ for travel options.
I also heard that the Cat Cafe is a must-see. Apparently, it’s overrun with fluffy felines. I’m not usually a cat person, but…lviv is making me question everything. You can find reviews and info here: https://www.yelp.com/biz/lviv-cat-cafe-lviv.
Honestly, the whole place feels like a movie set. I keep expecting someone to yell “cut!” and a director to emerge. It’s got this…slightly surreal quality. I’m thinking of sending some photos to a friend who’s an indie film scout. Maybe they’ll see something I don’t. Check out some local film boards here: https://www.film.lviv.ua/en/.
I’m not sure what I’m going to do tomorrow. Maybe explore some more of the city. Maybe eat more chocolate. Maybe try to decipher the meaning of 704617 and 1804093604. Or maybe just wander around and soak it all in. Lviv is weird. Lviv is wonderful. Lviv is…something else entirely.
