Lost in the Echoes of Los Angeles: A Drummer's Dizzying Detour
okay, so. los angeles. right? everyone’s got an opinion. i’m usually behind a kit, not waxing poetic about sunshine and palm trees, but here i am. i just got back from a week there, touring with… well, doesn’t matter who. the point is, i needed a break from the relentless thump-thump-thump and decided to wander.
and wow. it’s… a lot. like, a sensory overload in the best and most exhausting way. i’m still processing. i’m pretty sure i left a piece of my sanity somewhere near *Griffith Observatory.
I spent most of my time just… walking. No agenda. Just letting the city swallow me whole. Found this amazing little vintage shop in Echo Park - seriously, the owner had a collection of 70s drum hats that would make your head spin. I didn’t buy any (budget, you know?), but I spent a solid hour just drooling. Check out some other cool spots on Yelp: https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=vintage+clothing&find_loc=Echo+Park,+Los+Angeles,+CA.
The weather? I just checked and it’s… a damp hug. Like, the kind where you’re not sure if it’s comforting or just slightly unsettling. Around 16 degrees, feels like it too. Humidity’s creeping up, which is weird for LA, right?
I stumbled into this dive bar in Silver Lake - The Satellite, I think it was called - and overheard some serious gossip. Apparently, the owner’s been having a feud with the coffee shop next door over parking spaces. Classic. Someone told me that the coffee shop retaliated by putting up a sign that said, “We serve caffeine, not drama.” Brutal.
Food-wise, I mostly just grabbed whatever looked vaguely edible. Found this incredible taco truck near Downtown LA - seriously, the best al pastor I’ve ever had. No name, just a beat-up truck with a line of people wrapped around the block. I’m pretty sure it’s a local secret. I’m also a big fan of In-N-Out, obviously. It’s a tourist trap, but it’s a good tourist trap.
I also spent an afternoon wandering around Santa Monica. The beach was… crowded. Like, aggressively crowded. But the people-watching was top-notch. I saw a guy trying to teach his chihuahua to surf. It wasn’t going well.
If you get bored, San Diego and San Bernardino are just a short drive away. I didn’t make it to either, but I heard they’re… different. I’m still trying to process everything. Los Angeles is a city of contradictions. It’s beautiful and broken, glamorous and gritty, overwhelming and oddly… comforting. I’m already planning my return trip. Maybe next time I’ll actually bring a map. Or a therapist. Or both.
Oh! And a local warned me about the parking situation near Hollywood Boulevard*. Apparently, it’s a nightmare. Seriously, just Uber everywhere. Trust me on this one. Okay, I’m officially exhausted. Time for a nap. And maybe a strong cup of coffee.
