Lost in the Echoes of Chicago (4890119 & 1840011404)
okay, so chicago. it’s…a lot. i landed here yesterday, and immediately felt like i’d walked into a movie. honestly, the air feels thick, like someone’s trying to hold a secret. i’m not sure if it’s the humidity (80%?! seriously?), or just the general vibe, but it’s definitely something. the weather forecast said temp 3.01, feels like -1.74, but it's surprisingly mild - like a cool, damp hug. i just checked and it's…well, gray. consistently gray. hope you like that kind of thing.
i’m here because of this weird jumble of numbers - 4890119 and 1840011404. i found them scrawled on a napkin at a little cafe in my hometown, and for some reason, they just burrowed into my brain. felt like a breadcrumb trail to…somewhere. so, chicago, here i am, chasing the echoes.
i’m staying in a little Airbnb near Wicker Park. apparently, it’s the place to be for “cool kids,” which, let’s be real, is a pretty vague descriptor. the neighbors are…interesting. a lot of artists, musicians, and people who look like they haven’t slept in three days (which, fair). if you get bored, Milwaukee is just a short drive away, and there’s a whole hidden gem scene waiting to be explored. you could check out Chicago's neighborhood guide for some ideas.
the city hums with a low, constant thrum. it feels ancient and new at the same time. like a history book that’s still being written. i spent yesterday wandering around the Art Institute. seriously, the Impressionist collection is mind-blowing. i overheard some art students talking about how the museum is kinda haunted. they said you can sometimes hear faint piano music coming from the old building. whoa. maybe i’ll check that out.
today? today i’m planning to explore the Riverwalk, maybe grab some deep-dish pizza (wish me luck - i'm a thin-crust kinda person), and generally get lost. i’m also trying to track down the origin of those numbers. i checked some online forums, but no luck so far. anyone have any ideas?
*Pro-tip: invest in a good pair of walking shoes. seriously. you’ll be doing a lot of walking. also, be prepared for crowds. chicago is a popular city, and it shows.
i’ve heard that the comedy scene here is killer. someone told me that the comedy clubs in Lincoln Park are where the real* talent is discovered. I might check out The Second City if i can snag a ticket.
i also keep seeing mentions of some hidden speakeasies. apparently, they’re tucked away in basements and behind unmarked doors. i heard that one of them has a secret entrance through a laundromat. wild, right?
i'm going to try and find some local street art. The city's got a pretty thriving graffiti scene - you can find some cool stuff on Street Art Chicago. It's like a visual map of the city's pulse.
anyway, that’s chicago so far. a confusing, beautiful mess. wish me luck with the number hunt! and if you’ve been, hit me up with any hidden gems.
oh, and i saw a sign for a vintage record store downtown. gotta check that out! plus, I’m told the local coffee shops are incredible too. I think i’ll check out Intelligentsia Coffee and see what the hype is about.
i just realized i’m rambling. sorry. i’m probably running on caffeine and sheer desperation at this point. but hey, that’s life, right?
